By MyKhel Staff

Afghanistan’s 18-year-old mystery spinner, Allah Ghazanfar, made headlines during the Afghanistan vs Bangladesh 1st ODI on November 6, 2024. Ghazanfar claimed a sensational 6/26, leading his team to a dominant 96-run victory.

His incredible performance not only helped Afghanistan bowl out Bangladesh for a mere 143 but also solidified his reputation as one of the brightest young talents in world cricket. Here’s a deep dive into Ghazanfar’s journey so far.

Who is Allah Ghazanfar

Early Life

Allah Ghazanfar was born on March 20, 2006, in the Zurmat district of Paktia Province, Afghanistan. Standing tall at 6 feet 2 inches, Ghazanfar initially pursued fast bowling. However, his career trajectory took a major turn when former Afghanistan captain, Dawlat Ahmadzai, introduced him to spin bowling. Ghazanfar quickly adapted to the new art and began honing his craft as an off-spinner. His natural height and strong bowling technique have drawn comparisons to other Afghan spinners, including the renowned Mujeeb Zadran.

Personal Life

Ghazanfar hails from a family with five older brothers and, as of 2022, resides in Kabul, Afghanistan. His early life was shaped by a strong family network, which has supported his cricketing ambitions. Though relatively new to the cricketing world, Ghazanfar’s passion for the sport has been evident from a young age. He made the most of the COVID-19 lockdown by focusing on his bowling technique, which laid the foundation for his rapid rise.

Domestic Career

Ghazanfar’s cricketing journey began in 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic. Initially a fast bowler, he made the transition to off-spin under the guidance of Dawlat Ahmadzai. Ghazanfar’s early performances were impressive, making an immediate impact in domestic cricket. He first showcased his talent for the Mis Ainak Knights in the Afghan Shpageeza Cricket League, where he made a memorable debut with 1/27 in four overs. His performance improved further in his second outing, taking four wickets in a match. Ghazanfar also played for Rawalpindi Raiders in the Pakistan Junior League in 2022, continuing to impress with his bowling skills.

In 2023, Ghazanfar was included in the auction for the Indian Premier League (IPL) but went unsold. Nonetheless, he continued to make strides, catching the eye of several franchise leagues. He was later selected for the Lanka Premier League’s Colombo Strikers and the 2025 Bangladesh Premier League’s Rangpur Riders.

IPL Career

The IPL 2024 season marked a breakthrough for Ghazanfar. Despite his early setback in the 2023 IPL auction, he was signed by Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) as a replacement for the injured Mujeeb Ur Rahman. At just 18 years old, Ghazanfar became one of the youngest players to feature in the IPL, with a base price of ₹20 lakh. His inclusion in the IPL 2024 squad signals the growing recognition of his talent on the global stage. Prior to his IPL signing, Ghazanfar had also trained with Mumbai Indians as a potential nets bowler, though visa issues prevented him from joining their setup.

International Career

Ghazanfar’s international debut came in March 2024 against Ireland, making him the youngest cricketer to debut for Afghanistan at the senior level at just 16 years and 236 days. He had already impressed in the under-19 circuit, where he was a key figure for Afghanistan during the 2024 Under-19 World Cup in South Africa. Ghazanfar played a pivotal role in Afghanistan's bowling attack, claiming key wickets, including a standout 3-wicket performance against New Zealand.

His 6/26 performance against Bangladesh in November 2024 cemented his place in the senior squad and highlighted his ability to bowl under pressure in international cricket. Ghazanfar’s unique bowling style and growing list of impressive performances make him a cricketer to watch as Afghanistan continues to climb the ranks of world cricket.

Allah Ghazanfar’s rapid rise in the cricket world has been nothing short of remarkable. With his impressive debut in international cricket, successful domestic stints, and inclusion in the IPL, the young spinner is quickly gaining attention as one of Afghanistan’s brightest cricketing prospects.
