Cricket Australia has now cleared her to play women's community and Premier Cricket across all Australian states and territories, with a potential pathway towards elite competitions such as the Women's Big Bash League from March 2027, subject to the governing body's eligibility requirements.

From Mumbai's youth cricket to a new pathway in Australia

Anaya's cricketing background predates her transition.

She grew up within Mumbai's competitive cricket system and played at the youth level as a top-order batter and all-rounder. Her age-group cricket brought her into the same ecosystem as several players who would go on to represent India, including Sarfaraz Khan.

She later moved to the United Kingdom, where she continued training and playing with local clubs.

Anaya will have to comply with continuous monitoring requirements concerning her serum testosterone levels as part of the eligibility framework.

She has welcomed the approach, arguing that inclusion and competitive fairness should not necessarily be treated as opposing principles.

"Cricket Australia has a framework designed to balance fairness, competitive integrity, and inclusion in women's sport, and my case has been considered through that framework," Anaya said.

"I believe that inclusion and fairness do not have to be treated as mutually exclusive principles. Good sporting policy should be capable of considering both."

She has described the approval as a route back to a sport that has been a major part of her life.

"I can finally speak about a pathway back to the sport that has been such a significant part of my life," she said at a press conference in Mumbai. "I am preparing to return to women's cricket in Australia with the aim of pursuing elite cricket from March 2027."

Why can Anaya Bangar play in Australia but not necessarily internationally?

This is where the distinction between domestic and international cricket becomes important.

The International Cricket Council introduced a much stricter policy in 2023, ruling that transgender women who have undergone male puberty are ineligible to compete in international women's cricket.

That means Cricket Australia's domestic framework and the ICC's international regulations do not offer the same pathway.

Anaya's clearance is therefore specifically significant because it opens a domestic route that would otherwise have remained closed to her.
