Asha Shobana has announced herself in the WPL 2024 with an excellent bowling performance against UP Warriorz.

She has picked up five wickets against UP Warriorz and has played a big part for RCB as Smriti Mandhana and her troops start the season with a victory.

Her spell of 5 for 22 in four overs was the driving force for RCB to get their win. Shobana picked up the key wickets of Vrinda Dinesh, Tahlia McGrath early, and then got three wickets in her last over to dent UP's chances. She had Shweta Sehrawat, Grace Harris and Kiran Navgire as her victims.

Who is Asha Shobana?

Asha Shobana (aka Shobhana Asha) is an Indian cricketer who plays for Royal Challengers Bangalore in WPL and has also represented Kerala, Puducherry and Railways in domestic cricket.

A leg spinner and a middle-order batter, Asha Shobana started off her journey as a 13-year-old when she played for Trivandrum and afterwards for the senior team. She was born in Trivandrum, the capital city of Kerala.

She was propelled to play cricket in light of the innings that Sachin Tendulkar played against Australia going after Shane Warne in Sharjah in 1998. Her introduction to women's cricket was seeing Neetu David bowling for the Indian women's team.

Her favourite cricketer is Stuart MacGill who also played as a right-arm leg spinner and a right-hand batter. She is yet to make her debut for India but may get the elusive opportunity if she continues in the same fashion.

Shobana Asha played five matches in WPL 2023 and picked up 5 wickets for RCB. And she has started the WPL 2024 in superb style, with a fifer against Warriorz.

Shobana Asha has fought poverty in her life as her father was a driver. Despite her humble background, she kept on pushing and the 32-year-old has now showcased her prowess in the WPL stage. Apart from cricket, she has a longing for pencil sketching, singing and has also learnt digital painting.

• Asha Shobana started her career as a pacer but switched to leg spin at the age of 13. One fine evening, a tired Asha tried spin bowling for the first time and it was such impressive that her coach persuaded her to bowl spin.
  
  
• Asha Shobana ended her decade-long stint with Railways after not finding a regular place in the team. She then moved to Puducherry to do commentary but met the Puducherry coach Shweta Mishra, who was a U-19 teammate of Shobana. Mishra offered Shobana a place in the Puducherry team and within a couple of days, the RCB spinner transitioned from a commentator to the captain of Puducherry. She was the leading wicket-taker for Puducherry in the Women's Senior One Day Cup in 2023, with 16 wickets to her name.
