Who is Chinmay Sutar? Mizoram batter scores 400 in Ranji Trophy against Nagaland, joins Legends

Chinmay Sutar etched his name in Indian domestic cricket history on Monday, October 19, 2026, by scoring an unbeaten 400 for Mizoram against Nagaland in the Ranji Trophy Plate Group.

The 29-year-old reached the milestone in just his second first-class appearance, becoming only the second batter to score a quadruple century in Ranji Trophy history. His marathon innings featured 46 fours and seven sixes from 517 deliveries as Mizoram declared at 581/9.

Who is Chinmay Sutar?

Born on May 3, 1997, Chinmay Rajesh Sutar is a Mumbai-born cricketer who has represented Mumbai and India at the emerging-team level. A batter who developed through Mumbai's competitive domestic cricket system, he has worked his way towards greater recognition through performances in regional and domestic tournaments.

Sutar represented India at the 2019 ACC Emerging Teams Asia Cup, where he made his List A debut against Nepal. He also registered a century during the tournament, highlighting his potential in limited-overs cricket. Earlier in 2026, he featured for Mumbai in the Vijay Hazare Trophy before moving to Mizoram ahead of the 2026-27 domestic season.

From 99 on Debut to a Historic 400

Sutar's first-class journey with Mizoram began impressively. In his Ranji Trophy debut against Manipur earlier this month, he scored 35 in the first innings before narrowly missing a century in the second, falling for 99. He followed that performance with an extraordinary quadruple century against Nagaland.

His 400 not out places him behind only Bhausaheb Nimbalkar's unbeaten 443 in the Ranji Trophy's all-time individual innings list. The achievement also brings him into an exclusive group of batters who have crossed 400 in first-class cricket, alongside legendary names such as Brian Lara and Don Bradman.
