Sri Lanka's promising prodigy Dunith Wellalage has grabbed the attention after his stellar performance with the ball against India in the Asia Cup 2023 on Tuesday (September 12).

The left-arm orthodox spinner has rattled India's top order and has picked up 5 wickets in the innings, which includes wickets of Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli and KL Rahul and Hardik Pandya.

Who is Dunith Wellalage?

Dunith Wellalage is a Sri Lankan player who is known for his left-arm spin bowling and batting down the order. Wellalage was born on January 9, 2003 in Colombo and has come through the youth ranks. He has done his education at St. Sebastian's College, Moratuwa and St. Joseph's College, Colombo.

The talented player starred for Sri Lanka in the Under-19 World Cup in 2022 and his performance there has paved the way to senior international cricket. Wellalage scored a hundred in the World Cup, while also picking up 17 wickets with the ball, the highest in the tournament. Wellalage captained the Lankans in the U-19 World Cup and became the first Sri Lankan youth captain to score a century in the World Cup.

Dunith Wellalage Senior Career

Dunith Wellalage made his Test debut against Pakistan in 2022 and so far has played a solitary Test match. He made his ODI debut against Australia in 2022 and so far has played 13 ODIs for the island country, picking up 17 wickets.

His bowling performance so far on Tuesday has been Wellalage's best bowling figures in his career. The 20-year-old ended up with a figure of 5/40 in his ten overs.
