The Spinner Who Dismissed Gill, Rahul and Pant: Meet Keshara Nuwantha

Keshara Nuwantha has been handed his Test debut for Sri Lanka in the opening match of the two-Test series against India in Galle, marking the latest step in the 25-year-old off-spinner's rise through the country's domestic cricket system.

Nuwantha was handed his maiden Test cap on Saturday, August 15, after Sri Lanka included him in their XI for the series opener. He became the 172nd player to represent Sri Lanka in Test cricket.

Born in Matara on October 21, 2000, Nuwantha has been part of Sri Lanka's domestic circuit since making his first-class debut in 2022. His performances with the ball, particularly over the past year, have brought him into the selectors' plans.

Keshara Nuwantha's domestic record

Nuwantha has built a strong first-class record despite having played only 15 matches before his international debut.

He has taken 64 wickets in 24 innings at an average of 22.12, with a strike rate of 39. His record includes five five-wicket hauls, with his best figures being 7/71.

His most productive campaign came in the 2025-26 Major League Tournament, where he represented Badureliya Sports Club.

Nuwantha played five matches and claimed 28 wickets at an average of 17.53 and a strike rate of 26.71. He took two five-wicket hauls during the tournament, including the 7/71 that remains his best first-class bowling performance.

Nuwantha impressed against India A

His performances against Indian opposition also played a role in his emergence ahead of the Test series.

During Sri Lanka A's unofficial Test series against India A in July, Nuwantha produced a five-wicket haul in the second match at the Galle International Stadium.

He finished with 5/159 from 50.3 overs as India A went on to win the match by 10 wickets. Despite Sri Lanka A's defeat, the performance gave Nuwantha an opportunity to test himself against several batters who would later feature in India's senior side.

He then made another impression during India's three-day warm-up match against an SLC XI in Colombo.

Nuwantha took three wickets in that game, dismissing KL Rahul, Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant as India chased down 207 to win by six wickets.

That experience means his Test debut against India comes after he has already bowled to several of the batters he will face in the series.

A St Servatius' College product

Nuwantha was born and raised in Matara and attended St Servatius' College, one of Sri Lanka's established cricketing schools.

The school also produced former Sri Lanka great Sanath Jayasuriya, giving Nuwantha another notable connection to the country's cricketing history.

Jayasuriya represented Sri Lanka in 582 international matches, scoring 20,966 runs and taking 437 wickets across formats.

Nuwantha now has the opportunity to establish his own place in Sri Lankan cricket, beginning with a Test debut against India at one of the country's most spin-friendly venues.

Why is Keshara Nuwantha making his Test debut?

Nuwantha's selection is the culmination of a steady rise rather than a sudden breakthrough.

His first-class numbers have been strong, particularly his ability to consistently take wickets, while his performances against India A and the SLC XI have given the selectors recent evidence of his ability against higher-quality opposition.

His off-spin could also prove important in Galle, where spin is expected to play a major role as the Test progresses.

For Nuwantha, however, the challenge is now considerably greater. A Test debut against India puts him up against an experienced batting line-up, including Rahul, Gill and Pant - three players he has already dismissed in the build-up to the series.

After impressing in domestic cricket and against India A, Nuwantha now gets his first opportunity to show whether that form can translate to the highest level.
