Who is Simran Shaikh? The Inspiring Journey of Dharavi’s Daughter to WPL Most Expensive Player for Rs 1.90 Crore – Family, Struggles, & Love Life Revealed

Simran Shaikh's story isn’t one you'd find in a fairytale, but it’s definitely one for the books. In a world that often tells girls from underprivileged backgrounds to stay within the boundaries of societal norms, Simran broke those shackles with a bat and ball in hand. From the narrow, cramped lanes of Dharavi—Asia’s largest slum—Simran took the world by storm, proving that dreams don’t care where they come from.

Now, this cricket prodigy has become the shining star of the Women's Premier League (WPL) 2025, with Gujarat Giants snagging her for a whopping Rs 1.90 crore. Yes, you heard it right. From a child told to stick to housework to a player worth millions, Simran’s journey is the epitome of resilience and triumph.

A Daughter Who Defied the Odds: Growing Up in Dharavi

Simran's early days in Dharavi were anything but easy. A daughter of a wireman, Jahid Ali, and his wife, Akhtari Bano, Simran's life was shaped by constant challenges. Dharavi is a place where poverty and prejudice are rife, and girls who want to play cricket with boys aren't exactly celebrated.

“What are you doing, Jahid? It’s time she learns ghar ka kaam (household work),” people told Simran’s father, urging him to stop her from pursuing her passion. Yet, despite the harsh criticism, Jahid stood firm in supporting his daughter’s dreams, proving that sometimes, it only takes one person to believe in you when the whole world says you can’t.

In her own words, Simran recalls, “Coming from a Muslim family and being underprivileged, it wasn't an easy choice to play cricket. I remember people telling my father, 'Jahid, kya kar raha hai tu (What are you doing?). Sports won't get her anywhere.' But my father didn’t ask me to stop playing. Today the same people have come to congratulate our family."

The Big Win: WPL 2025 Auction and What It Means for Simran’s Family

On the evening of the WPL 2025 mini-auction, when Simran’s name was called out and Gujarat Giants bought her for a jaw-dropping Rs 1.90 crore, it wasn’t just a win for her—it was a win for her entire family. “Zindagi bhar yeh gali-kuchar mein nikal diya. Zhopde mein rahe. (Our whole lives we have lived near narrow lanes with open gutters in the slum).

Eleven people in our family live in two rooms. Now with this money we will buy a good house and live a decent life. Thank God I didn't listen to friends who told me to dissuade Simran from playing cricket,”Jahid told the Indian Express paper.

The significance of that moment can’t be overstated. This isn’t just about a sportsperson making her mark; it’s about a young woman giving her family a future they had only dreamed of. It’s about breaking free from the chains of expectation and showing the world that no matter where you come from, anything is possible.

More Than Just Cricket: What’s Next for Simran Shaikh?

Simran’s achievement at the WPL auction wasn’t just a milestone in her career; it was a signal of things to come. Alongside her, other uncapped Indian talents such as G Kamalini and Prema Rawat were also bagged for impressive amounts, proving that Indian women’s cricket is brimming with potential waiting to be unleashed.

Simran Shaikh is no longer just a local cricket hero from Dharavi; she is now a beacon of hope and an inspiration to millions. As for her personal life, Simran seems to be keeping her cards close to her chest.

With all the focus on her career, there’s no word on any relationships, suggesting she is more dedicated to her profession than anything else at the moment. But who knows? With her success and fame, things may change, and perhaps we will see more of her life off the field soon.

Simran is all set to join the Gujarat Giants squad for WPL 2025, alongside the likes of Ashleigh Gardner, Beth Mooney, Laura Wolvaardt, and Deandra Dottin. With such a talented team by her side, there's no telling how far she can go. But one thing is certain—Simran Shaikh has arrived, and she’s ready to make history.
