Who is Subhadeep Ghosh? India's New Fielding Coach takes over from T Dilip, has IPL and International Experience

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) appointed Subhadeep Ghosh as the fielding coach of the senior men's cricket team ahead of the two-Test series against Sri Lanka. He replaces T Dilip, whose contract was not renewed after India's tour of Zimbabwe.

While Ghosh may not be a household name among cricket fans, he brings decades of experience as both a domestic cricketer and a specialist coach, having worked extensively across state teams, the IPL and the Indian women's setup.

Who is Subhadeep Ghosh?

Born in Digboi, Assam, on November 13, 1968, Subhadeep Ghosh represented Assam and Railways during his domestic playing career. A right-handed batter and occasional off-spinner, he featured in 17 First-Class and 17 List A matches between 1994 and 2004.

Although his playing career did not reach international heights, Ghosh carved out a reputation as a dedicated professional before moving into coaching.

Long Coaching Journey

After retiring from competitive cricket, Ghosh steadily built his coaching credentials. He served as head coach of the Assam senior men's team and later became a respected fielding specialist in Indian cricket.

His coaching journey has also included multiple assignments in the Indian Premier League, most notably with Delhi Capitals, where he worked as a fielding coach.

Before joining the men's national side, Ghosh spent two years as the fielding coach of the India women's team. During that period, he was part of the support staff at the 2022 Women's ODI World Cup and the 2023 Women's T20 World Cup.

Ghosh's first series with the senior men's team will be the two-Test tour of Sri Lanka, beginning in Galle on August 15. He joins head coach Gautam Gambhir and the rest of the support staff as India look to maintain their strong standards in the field.

The appointment comes at a time when the BCCI is reshaping parts of the coaching staff. Dilip, who has been a long serving fielding coach for the Indian team, has departed, while Gambhir's assistant Ryan ten Doesschate has also left his role.
