Delhi Capitals handed spinner Tripurana Vijay his Indian Premier League debut against Rajasthan Royals at Arun Jaitley Stadium on Sunday. Captain Axar Patel confirmed the change at the toss, saying Vijay replaced Aquib Nabi in the playing eleven after Delhi chose to bowl first.

Axar said at the coin toss, "Looking at the nature of the pitch, unfortunately Auqib Nabi misses out, and instead Vijay Tripurana is making his debut." The decision underlined Delhi’s focus on spin against Rajasthan’s strong batting order.

Vijay entered the attack during the powerplay, when Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and Dhruv Jurel were attacking. The 24-year-old conceded 18 runs in his first over. Sooryavanshi targeted the off-spinner, hitting two fours in the first three balls.

Vijay almost removed Sooryavanshi for his first IPL wicket. Sameer Rizvi dropped a chance in the deep, allowing the Rajasthan Royals opener to continue. Sooryavanshi capped the over with a six, deepening Vijay’s tough start in the world’s richest franchise T20 league.

Vijay came back for a second over and showed better control. He conceded only one six in that spell. Across his first two overs, he gave away 29 runs. The improved second over will offer some comfort after a harsh introduction.

Born in 2001 in Tekkali, Andhra Pradesh, Vijay is a right-arm off-break bowler. He earned notice through steady domestic performances. His major breakthrough came in the 2024/25 Ranji Trophy, with a 10-wicket match haul against Rajasthan.

Vijay’s Ranji display against Rajasthan caught the eye of IPL scouts. Delhi Capitals signed him at last year’s auction for ₹30 lakhs, aiming to use him in the middle overs. His strength is controlling runs in white-ball formats.
