Who is Tushar Arothe? The Ex-India coach who is detained by Vadodara Police

Former India women's coach Tushar Arothe has found himself in fresh controversy as he is suspected of association with criminal activities by Vadodara Police.

The Vadodara Police detained him for possessing a substantial amount of cash without a valid explanation. The detention came after Vadodara Police's Special Operations Group (SOG) discovered Rs 1 crore at Arothe's residence in Pratapgunj during a raid conducted on Saturday (March 2).

Who is Tushar Arothe?

Tushar Arothe is a former Indian cricketer and a coach who has been the head coach of the Women's Cricket Team, which reached the Final of the 2017 ICC Women's World Cup.

Arothe is 57 years old and was born in Vadodara on September 17, 1966. He has represented Baroda in first-class cricket, playing 114 first-class and 51 List A matches for them.

Arothe scored 6105 runs for Baroda in FC cricket and also picked up 225 wickets for them. After retiring as a player in 2003, he joined the coaching staff of the Indian Women's team in 2008.

Arothe's rise as a head coach came with the Indian women's team under his tutelage, Mithali Raj and co. reached the World Cup Final in 2017. He stepped down as the coach in 2018 following internal fallout.

What Happened to Tushar Arothe?

The SOG's meticulous investigation into Arothe's financial dealings led to the seizure of cash amounting to Rs 1.01 crore. This operation was initiated based on a tip-off about suspicious financial activities, resulting in the uncovering of grey bags filled with the noted sum. The lack of a satisfactory explanation for the possession of such a significant amount of cash has put Arothe under the spotlight for all the wrong reasons.

This incident isn't Arothe's first encounter with legal challenges. In April 2019, Arothe was among 19 individuals apprehended for alleged betting activities during an IPL match. Though he was granted bail, the incident added a dubious facet to his post-coaching career narrative.

The recent detention underscores the grim trajectory of Arothe's career post his coaching days, marking a significant fall from grace for the former coach who once celebrated significant achievements with the Indian Women's Cricket Team.
