Who is Xavier Bartlett? Aussie pace sensation triggering Pakistan top-order collapse

By MyKhel Staff

Australian pacer Xavier Bartlett delivered a stunning performance in the first T20I against Pakistan, claiming 3 for 13 in his four overs and triggering a collapse that left Pakistan reeling at 64/9.

His fiery spell dismissed top-order batters Mohammad Rizwan (0), Salman Agha (4), and Usman Khan (0) as Pakistan's first five wickets fell for a meagre 20 runs. Let's take a look at who this Aussie pace sensation is.

Xavier Bartlett profile

Personal Life

Xavier Colin Bartlett was born on December 17, 1998, in Adelaide, South Australia. His family moved to the Gold Coast, Queensland, when he was young, where his cricketing journey truly began. The right-arm fast bowler grew up playing junior cricket for Surfers Paradise before graduating from The Southport School in 2016. His formative years on the Gold Coast were instrumental in shaping his skills, particularly his ability to swing the ball at pace.

Early Career

Bartlett’s cricketing prowess became evident early on. He joined Queensland’s age-group teams, and at just 17, he made his first XI debut for the Gold Coast Dolphins. Representing Australia in the 2018 Under-19 World Cup was a turning point in his career, earning him the attention of selectors. Shortly after, he made his List A debut for Queensland, marking the start of his professional journey in domestic cricket.

Domestic Career

Bartlett’s first-class debut came in October 2019 for Queensland in the Sheffield Shield. With his ability to generate both pace and swing, he quickly established himself as a key player for Queensland. His domestic performance included vital spells that showcased his skill, especially in the early overs where his accuracy and movement created constant challenges for batters. His standout performance in domestic leagues laid a strong foundation for his later success in the Big Bash League (BBL).

BBL Career

Xavier Bartlett’s rise continued in the Big Bash League (BBL), where he initially played for the Brisbane Heat during the 2020–21 season. Although he began in short bursts under the BBL’s “X-factor” rule, he quickly became a mainstay in the lineup. Bartlett’s breakout season came in BBL|12, where he was Brisbane Heat’s leading wicket-taker, helping them clinch the title. His consistent performances attracted attention and bolstered his reputation as a reliable T20 bowler, ultimately paving the way for his international debut.

International Career

Bartlett’s exceptional form in the BBL earned him a call-up to Australia’s One Day International (ODI) squad in January 2024. Making his ODI debut against the West Indies, he delivered remarkable figures of 4/17, one of the best performances for an Australian debutant. In his T20I debut the following month, Bartlett continued to impress, taking crucial wickets against the West Indies. His recent spell of 3/13 against Pakistan in the first T20I, which decimated their top order, has only added to his growing stature on the international stage. Bartlett’s ability to deliver under pressure has made him a valuable asset for Australia across formats.
