Who Replaces Gus Atkinson? England Face Major Selection Dilemma Ahead of Second New Zealand Test

England's preparations for the second Test against New Zealand have been complicated by uncertainty surrounding Gus Atkinson, leaving selectors with a significant decision to make ahead of naming their squad.

While England have delayed announcing their squad, Atkinson's absence appears increasingly likely, forcing the selectors to consider a range of options as they look to maintain momentum following their victory at Lord's.

Gus Atkinson

The most straightforward replacement could come from within the existing squad. Fast bowlers Sonny Baker and Matthew Fisher were both included for the first Test and remain viable candidates to step into the pace attack. England could also hand a long-awaited return to Jofra Archer if the management believes he is ready for Test cricket once again.

However, replacing Atkinson is only part of the puzzle. With uncertainty also surrounding captain Ben Stokes, England may need to find a player capable of contributing with both bat and ball.

James Rew emerges as leading contender

One of the strongest options under consideration is Somerset batter James Rew, who travelled as the reserve batter for the first Test.

England could slot Rew into the middle order at No. 6 or No. 7 and field four specialist seamers, while relying on Joe Root and Jacob Bethell to provide spin support. The team adopted a similar strategy against India last year when Stokes was unavailable.

The Oval's conditions may also encourage such an approach, with Surrey often preferring seam-heavy attacks on their home ground.

Three quicks and Bashir another possibility

England could also retain spinner Shoaib Bashir despite his limited role at Lord's, where he did not bowl a single delivery in the match.

The surface used in the first Test was heavily criticised after producing excessive seam movement and variable bounce, conditions that are unlikely to be repeated at The Oval. If selectors expect a more balanced pitch, Bashir could keep his place alongside three frontline seamers and Rew in the batting lineup.

Rehan Ahmed offers all-round flexibility

Another intriguing option would be to replace Bashir with a spin-bowling all-rounder.

Rehan Ahmed strengthened his case in style after claiming 6 for 34 for England Lions against South Africa A. His ability to contribute with both bat and ball could provide England with greater balance if they choose to field four seamers.

Will Jacks and Dan Lawrence are also alternatives. Jacks featured in England's Ashes campaign earlier this year, while Lawrence recently boosted his credentials with a double century for Surrey in the County Championship.

Looking for a Stokes-like replacement

If England decide to seek a genuine all-round replacement, Craig Overton may be the standout candidate.

The Somerset all-rounder has enjoyed an impressive County Championship campaign, scoring two centuries and taking 24 wickets. While his credentials with both bat and ball are strong, fitting him into the middle order could prove challenging.

Surrey's Jordan Clark has also been mentioned due to his exceptional record at The Oval, though a Test recall for the 35-year-old would represent a surprise selection.

With several combinations available, England's selection meeting is likely to focus on finding the right balance rather than simply replacing Atkinson. Whether they opt for extra batting depth, another seam bowler or an all-round solution could reveal plenty about how they expect conditions at The Oval to play.
