Former India cricketer Syed Abid Ali passed away on Wednesday (March 12) at the age of 83.

Ali was an India player who played 29 Test matches and 5 ODIs for India and represented the country from 1967 to 1975.

Syed Abid Ali, born on September 9, 1941, in Hyderabad, was a renowned Indian cricketer known for his all-round abilities. He played for India during the late 1960s and early 1970s, excelling as a medium-pace bowler, a dependable lower-order batsman, and an exceptional fielder.

Early Life and Domestic Career

Abid Ali's cricketing journey started in Hyderabad, where he attended St. George's Grammar School and All Saints High School. Initially a wicketkeeper, he later transitioned into a bowling all-rounder, gaining recognition for his sharp reflexes and athleticism. He debuted in first-class cricket for Hyderabad in 1959, becoming an integral part of the team over the years.

International Debut and Key Performances

Abid Ali made his Test debut against Australia on December 23, 1967, in Adelaide. He had a dream debut, taking 6 wickets for 55 runs, the best figures by an Indian bowler in a debut Test at that time. In the same series, he proved his batting skills with scores of 78 and 81 in the Sydney Test.

Known for his adaptability, he opened both the batting and bowling for India on various occasions, including tours to New Zealand in 1968 and the West Indies in 1971. His agility on the field and ability to contribute in multiple roles made him a valuable asset to the Indian team.

After retiring from international cricket in 1975, Abid Ali devoted himself to coaching and mentoring young cricketers. He coached the Hyderabad junior teams before moving to the United States in the 1980s. He later took on coaching assignments in the Maldives and the UAE, and played a crucial role in guiding the Andhra Ranji team to a South Zone league victory in the 2001-02 season.
