Who Will Captain India in Test Cricket After Rohit Sharma? Top Four Contenders for Test Leadership

By MyKhel Staff

Rohit Sharma's sudden announcement of retirement has left a huge void in the Test setup of the Indian cricket team.

Rohit announced his decision to retire from the Red Ball format on Wednesday. There were reports that he may be removed from Test captaincy for the England tour, and soon after, the 38-year-old confirmed that he will hang up his boots from the five-day format.

Who Will Captain India in Test Cricket After Rohit Sharma

"Hello everyone, I would just like to share that I am retiring from Test cricket. It's been an absolute honour to represent my country in whites. Thank you for all the love and support over the years. I will continue to represent India in the ODI format," Rohit announced on Instagram.

Amid Rohit's departure, the baton of Test cricket leadership will be passed on a new player. Although team India have a number of star players in their ranks, BCCI may put the responsibility on one of these five players.

Jasprit Bumrah

Jasprit Bumrah stands out as a leading candidate for the Test captaincy. Renowned for his exceptional bowling prowess and strategic mindset, Bumrah has previously captained India in Tests, notably leading the team in the 2022 Edgbaston Test. His leadership qualities have been lauded, with former captain MS Dhoni predicting his potential as a future leader as early as 2016. Bumrah's calm demeanor and deep understanding of the game make him a compelling choice. However, considerations regarding workload management, given his role as a frontline fast bowler, may influence the decision.

Rishabh Pant

Rishabh Pant brings a dynamic presence to the field, combining aggressive batting with sharp wicketkeeping skills. He has previously led India in T20 Internationals and has been a pivotal figure in the Test arena, delivering match-winning performances, especially in challenging overseas conditions. Pant's fearless approach and ability to thrive under pressure position him as a strong contender for leadership.

Shubman Gill

At 25, Shubman Gill represents the new generation of Indian cricket. His elegant batting technique and composure have earned him accolades, and his leadership potential has been recognized through his captaincy roles in India A and the national team during the Zimbabwe T20I series. Gill's recent exposure to captaincy in the IPL may further equip him to carry the baton for Indian Test leadership.

KL Rahul

KL Rahul offers a wealth of experience, having captained India across all three formats. His leadership stints in the Indian Premier League with Punjab Kings and Lucknow Super Giants have showcased his strategic capabilities. Rahul's versatility as a top-order batsman and wicketkeeper adds to his value. However, his intermittent form and injury concerns have affected his consistency in the Test arena.

The transition of Test captaincy post-Rohit Sharma is a critical juncture for Indian cricket. While Jasprit Bumrah and Rishabh Pant emerge as immediate frontrunners, the youthful exuberance of Shubman Gill presents exciting long-term prospects.
