Delhi Capitals (DC) pulled off a remarkable recovery to defeat Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) by six wickets in Match 5 of IPL 2026, overcoming an early collapse to chase down the target with 17 balls to spare at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow.

Chasing 142 on a tricky surface, Delhi were reduced to 26/4 inside the Powerplay before Sameer Rizvi and Tristan Stubbs stitched together a match-winning 119-run partnership to guide the visitors to 145/4 in 17.1 overs.

The win marked Delhi Capitals' fifth consecutive victory over Lucknow Super Giants in head-to-head encounters.

Sameer Rizvi and Tristan Stubbs rescue Delhi after early collapse

Delhi Capitals' chase began in dramatic fashion when Mohammed Shami dismissed KL Rahul for a golden duck on the very first ball of the innings, sending the home crowd into celebration mode.

Lucknow's bowlers capitalised on the early momentum, with Mohsin Khan and Prince Yadav striking in quick succession to leave Delhi reeling at 26/4 inside the first six overs. At that stage, Lucknow looked firmly in control of the contest.

However, the introduction of Impact Player Sameer Rizvi turned the tide.

Rizvi, batting with composure under pressure, combined with Tristan Stubbs to rebuild the innings steadily. The pair focused on strike rotation before gradually accelerating once the field spread, neutralising Lucknow's bowling attack.

Rizvi eventually finished unbeaten on 70 off 47 balls, anchoring the chase and sealing victory with a towering six. Stubbs played the supporting role to perfection, remaining unbeaten on 39 off 32 deliveries as Delhi crossed the finish line comfortably.

Their 119-run unbroken partnership proved to be the defining moment of the match.

Delhi bowlers restrict Lucknow to below-par total

Earlier in the evening, Delhi Capitals produced a disciplined bowling performance to restrict Lucknow Super Giants to 141 all out in 18.4 overs.

Lucknow endured an early setback when captain Rishabh Pant was run out for 7 after attempting a risky single, setting the tone for a difficult innings.

Mitchell Marsh provided some resistance with 35 off 28 balls, striking three sixes to keep the scoreboard moving. Abdul Samad also contributed with a valuable 36 off 25 deliveries, helping Lucknow reach a competitive total.

However, Delhi's pace attack dominated the middle and death overs.

Lungi Ngidi delivered a standout performance, finishing with figures of 3/27, while T Natarajan matched the effort with 3/29 to dismantle the Lucknow middle order. Kuldeep Yadav chipped in with two wickets, ensuring that Lucknow never built sustained momentum.

Despite a spirited bowling effort early in the second innings, Lucknow's total ultimately proved insufficient.

Key stat: Mohammed Shami sets IPL first-ball wicket record

One of the standout moments of the match came when Mohammed Shami dismissed KL Rahul off the very first ball of Delhi's innings.

The breakthrough marked Shami's fifth first-ball wicket in IPL history, setting a new tournament record for the most first-ball dismissals.

Although the early wickets briefly swung the momentum in Lucknow's favour, Delhi's recovery ensured the milestone remained a statistical highlight rather than a match-defining moment.

Player of the Match: Sameer Rizvi shines under pressure

Sameer Rizvi was named Player of the Match for his unbeaten 70-run knock, which transformed Delhi's fortunes after their shaky start.

Coming in during a high-pressure phase, Rizvi displayed maturity and calculated aggression, particularly against spin bowlers, ensuring the chase never spiralled out of control.

His partnership with Stubbs highlighted the importance of composure on a surface where batting was far from straightforward.

Delhi Capitals' victory gives them early momentum in IPL 2026 and strengthens their growing dominance over Lucknow Super Giants in recent meetings.

For Lucknow, the match highlighted both positives and concerns. Their bowlers delivered an excellent start, but batting inconsistencies and the inability to capitalise on early breakthroughs proved costly.

As the tournament progresses, Delhi will look to build on this comeback victory, while Lucknow will need to address their batting vulnerabilities before their next fixture.
