In yesterday's World Cup 2023 match, England succumbed to their third consecutive defeat and fourth overall in the World Cup 2023 as Sri Lanka thrashed them by eight wickets at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.
England won the toss and opted to bat first on Thursday, October 26 but 156 runs in 33.2 overs is all they could manage to post. Ben Stokes top-scored for them with 43 off 74. Jonny Bairstow (30) was their second-highest run-scorer but he would have found himself back in the pavilion on the first ball of the match had Sri Lanka taken a review for an LBW dismissal.

Angelo Mathews, who has been inducted as Matheesha Pathirana's replacement, dismissed Dawid Malan (28) and Sri Lanka never looked back after that in the match. Lahiru Kumara ran through the middle-order with figures of 3/35. The Sri Lanka fielders were brilliant in the middle. Joe Root (3) and Adil Rashid were two run out dismissals for Sri Lanka in the match.
After bundling out England for the lowest ever all out total at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Sri Lanka completed the chase with eight wickets and 146 balls remaining. David Willey dismissed Kusal Perera (4) and Kusal Mendis (11) early but a 137-run partnership between Pathum Nissanka (77*) and Sadeera Samarawickrama (65*) ensured Sri Lanka registered their second win. With the win Sri Lanka pipped Pakistan to jump to the fifth spot in the World Cup 2023 points table.
