LSG vs MI: Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) secured their first home victory of the season, defeating Mumbai Indians (MI) by 12 runs in a gripping encounter in Match 16 of IPL 2025.
The match, filled with momentum swings, saw standout performances from both sides, but LSG held their nerve to seal the win and move up to sixth place in the points table.

After being put into bat, LSG got off to a dream start, courtesy of Mitchell Marsh and Aiden Markram. Marsh launched a blistering attack on MI's bowlers, racing to a half-century inside the powerplay-his third of the season. He smashed 60 off 31 balls, ensuring LSG capitalized on the fielding restrictions. Markram played the perfect supporting role, anchoring the innings with a composed 53 off 38.
Despite the flying start, MI's captain Hardik Pandya turned the tide with a sensational five-wicket haul (5/36), becoming the first IPL captain to achieve this feat. His spell in the death overs restricted LSG to 203/8, preventing them from posting an even bigger total. Late cameos from Ayush Badoni (30 off 19) and David Miller (27 off 14) provided the finishing touches.
Chasing 204, Mumbai Indians introduced a new opening pair of Ryan Rickelton and Will Jacks in Rohit Sharma's absence. However, LSG's bowlers exploited the large boundaries to perfection, dismissing both openers early.
Despite the setbacks, MI recovered well, ending the powerplay at 64/2, thanks to a brilliant counterattack from Naman Dhir (46 off 24) and Suryakumar Yadav. The duo stitched a crucial 69-run partnership before Digvesh Rathi dismissed Naman, triggering a slowdown.
Suryakumar, who brought up his 25th IPL fifty, looked in control but mistimed a scoop shot off Avesh Khan, handing a crucial catch to Abdul Samad. As MI's chase lost steam, Shardul Thakur and Rathi tightened the screws.
With 22 runs needed off the final over, Tilak Varma retired out (25 off 23), making way for Mitchell Santner. Hardik Pandya struck a six off the first ball, but Avesh Khan held his nerve, delivering pinpoint yorkers to close out the match. Hardik remained unbeaten on 28 off 16, but MI fell short by 12 runs.
Mitchell Marsh (LSG): 60 off 31 (Set the platform with a blazing powerplay knock)
Aiden Markram (LSG): 53 off 38 (Anchored the innings beautifully)
Hardik Pandya (MI): 5/36 (Best-ever bowling figures by an IPL captain)
Digvesh Rathi (LSG): 1/21 (Player of the Match for his economical and match-winning spell)
Suryakumar Yadav (MI): 54 (Led MI's fightback but fell at a crucial moment)
With this win, Lucknow Super Giants climbed to sixth place, while Mumbai Indians slipped to seventh. MI will look to bounce back when they take on Royal Challengers Bangalore at the Wankhede on April 7. Meanwhile, LSG will face Kolkata Knight Riders at Eden Gardens in an afternoon encounter.
LSG's thrilling victory, fueled by an all-round team effort, will provide them with much-needed momentum as they progress in the tournament.
