India's 76-run loss to South Africa in the T20 World Cup 2026 Super Eight stage has left fans with many questions. India's batting coach Sitanshu Kotak addressed these concerns by revealing that the team management, led by captain Suryakumar Yadav and head coach Gautam Gambhir, is focusing on high levels of communication to keep the squad united, even when making difficult decisions.
The biggest shock before the match was seeing Washington Sundar in the playing XI instead of Axar Patel. Kotak explained that this wasn't due to Axar's form, but a specific plan to tackle South Africa's left-handed hitters.

"See, obviously, Surya and Gautam both spoke to him. Which is obvious, whether we say it or not. We thought that an off-spinner was needed because three left-handers upfront. We got the wickets in the beginning. Washington didn't bowl in the Powerplay," Kotak said.
While the plan was for Sundar to bowl early, the early wickets taken by the pacers changed the game's flow. Despite the result, Kotak insisted that Axar's morale remains high:
"But, actually, he was supposed to bowl in a Powerplay. So, that can change according to the match. For that reason, this combination was decided. And the rest - what you are saying about confidence - Axar is such a player; he has played so much and performed so much, he doesn't lack confidence. It was very clear from him, and from the head coach and the captain, what we are thinking and why we are doing this," he added.
With the opening combination failing to fire, the management is now considering a major change at the top. Kotak admitted that Sanju Samson's inclusion for the upcoming match is being contemplated amid the long run of lean form.
"See, basically, if we felt that Sanju's last few innings were low on confidence and Ishan was scoring runs, then obviously you go with Ishan. Now we are in a situation where we have to think about whether we need to change anything or if we should still go with the same thing. But yes, it is definitely something to think about. If we have to change something, what do we change and how do we change it?," he added.
The Indian team isn't hiding from their mistakes. The honesty from the coaching staff suggests that we might see a refreshed XI in the next game. Whether it's the return of Axar Patel or the inclusion of Sanju Samson, the goal is clear: Win at all costs.
