Bengaluru, August 3: The Board of Control for Cricket in India failed miserably in pushing Mithali Raj's name for the Khel Ratna award, which was declared on Thursday (August 3). The award went to hockey player Sardara Singh and paralympian Devendra Jhajharia.
The BCCI should have nominated Mithali after she became the first batswoman to reach the 6,000-run mark in one-dayers during the ICC Women's World Cup in England last month. But the Indian board chose not do so.
The board had nominated Cheteswar Pujara and Harmanpreet Kaur for Arjuna award and they received the honour this time.
Of course, the last date for nomination was on April 30, but there have been instances of other associations nominating players well after the deadline. Such cases were considered sympathetically often and the players concerned were recognised duely.
So, what wrong did Mithali do?
