As India ushers in a new era of Test cricket under the youthful leadership of Shubman Gill, former India batsman Sanjay Manjrekar has stirred the pot by terming the team selection for the England tour as "strange".

His cryptic remark, posted on social media, has sparked intrigue and debate across the cricketing fraternity. India's 18-member squad for the challenging five-Test series in England, beginning June 20, marks a significant turning point.

With stalwarts Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli stepping aside, the baton has passed to a new generation led by 25-year-old Gill - now officially the fifth youngest to captain India in Test cricket.

But it wasn't Gill's promotion that raised Manjrekar's eyebrow; it was the composition of the squad. The inclusion of relatively untested names like Sai Sudharsan, Karun Nair's unexpected recall, and the maiden Test call-up for left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh appear to be the reasons behind his cryptic "strange selection" tag.

"Strange team selection overall. But India go to England with nothing to lose," Manjrekar wrote on 'X'. "It's a team in transition so we can only wish it the very best & yes, be patient when it comes to returns on investment."

While he stopped short of naming names or elaborating on what he found "strange", his words hint at concerns over a combination that seems long on promise but short on experience. Nair, who last played a Test in 2017, returns seemingly out of the blue. Meanwhile, Sai Sudharsan's call-up, though reflective of his fine domestic and IPL form, has come without a first-class century to his name.

The omission of seasoned fast bowler Mohammed Shami - due to injury - has also left a noticeable void in the pace attack, especially considering the seaming English conditions. Former all-rounder Irfan Pathan echoed the sentiment, congratulating the newcomers but lamenting the absence of Shami: "Surely team India is going to miss Mohammed Shami's services in those conditions."

Despite the misgivings, the cricketing community has rallied around Gill. Former India captain Harbhajan Singh offered a succinct endorsement: "Congratulations @ShubmanGill. Good luck in England."

Gill's IPL franchise, Gujarat Titans, beamed with pride: "Ek naye Test era ka-aarambh! Our Captain, now #TeamIndia's Test Skipper!"

Even rivals Chennai Super Kings joined in the chorus: "From Next Gen to The Next Captain. Shubman Gill leads India into a new Test chapter!"

There's no doubt that the squad reflects a bold vision of the future. Yet, as Manjrekar subtly hinted, vision must be balanced with practicality, especially in the unforgiving cauldron of English conditions. For now, it's a wait-and-watch game. As India braces for a tour that could define its next Test era, all eyes are on the young captain and his equally fresh-faced comrades.

One thing's clear - the road ahead may be rocky, but it's certainly not lacking in colour or intrigue.
