Why has BCCI rejected Gautam Gambhir's proposal to bring Jonty Rhodes as Fielding Coach?

Just hours after Gautam Gambhir's arrival as the new head coach of the Indian cricket team, BCCI has taken two steps which may irk Gambhir.

Gambhir was reportedly given full independence to choose his own support staff, but two of his proposals are said to be dismissed by the apex body of Indian cricket.

India

Gambhir recommended either Lakshmipathy Balaji or R Vinay Kumar as bowling coach, both of whom have played alongside him at KKR. But BCCI is likely to appoint someone more accomplished at the helm as bowling coach. There are reports that former India pacer Zaheer Khan can be appointed with the role.

Abhishek Nayar is almost certain to be one of Gambhir's deputies, but now a fresh speculation has arisen regarding the fielding coach.

As per reports, Gambhir recommended South Africa legend Jonty Rhodes as the fielding coach. The duo worked at Lucknow Super Giants and have a strong bond. But BCCI may not appoint the South African for a particular reason.

Why has BCCI blocked Jonty Rhodes as Bowling Coach?

Jonty Rhodes has been one of the best fielders ever to play cricket. The former South African player was absolute electric on the field and indeed can be a massive addition to the Indian team. But BCCI is not contemplating on appointing Jonty Rhodes because of a couple of reasons, despite admiring Rhodes' credentials.

All-Indian Support Staff

BCCI is more inclined to form an all-Indian coaching staff. The team has improved on fielding considerably under the guidance of T Dilip, and BCCI is not ready to appoint a foreign coach who may require time to get accustomed to new personnel.

India has been stacked with Indian support and coaching staff in the last seven or eight years and BCCI is adamant to stick to that policy.

T Dilip can be Retained

Although BCCI announced T Dilip as departed coaching staff, the fielding coach may be retained and renewed for a fresh term. Dilip is an extremely popular member among the Indian players and his presence has been one of the focal off-field successes for the Indian team.

His introduction of fielding medals after the match has been a huge hit which put an added impetus among the Indian players. The visuals of T20 World Cup and ODI World Cup clearly show how the players also enjoyed the initiative and he is a valued member.

Rhodes will definitely be a fantastic addition to the Indian team but Dilip's second stint can also have a positive impact in the team.
