Why has LSG star Nicholas Pooran announced shocking retirement from International Cricket?

By MyKhel Staff

Nicholas Pooran, the dynamic Trinidadian left‑hander and former white‑ball captain of the West Indies, announced his retirement from international cricket on Tuesday (June 9).

The decision, revealed via a heartfelt social media statement, marks the end of a remarkable international career at just 29 years old.

Nicholas Pooran

The star batter, who is known for his striking ability and six-hitting prowess, shocked the world by suddenly announcing his departure, which is a huge blow for West Indies cricket.

"This game we love has given and will continue to give so much - joy, purpose, unforgettable memories, and a chance to represent the people of the West Indies," the statement from Pooran wrote.

"Wearing that maroon, standing for the anthem, and giving everything I had each time I stepped on the field... it's hard to put into words what that truly means to me. To have led the team as captain is a privilege I will always hold close to my heart. Though this international chapter of my career closes, my love for West Indies cricket will never fade. I wish the team and the region nothing but success and strength for the road ahead," it added.

His final international appearances were a T20I series against Bangladesh in December 2024, while the last ODI appearance came in 2023 against Sri Lanka. Pooran had never played a Test match in his career.

Why has Nicholas Pooran announced Retirement Suddenly?

It is a massive shock that a player of Pooran's calibre has suddenly announced retirement from international cricket at just 29!

A major contributor to Pooran's decision is the physical and mental toll of a packed cricket calendar. Following a demanding IPL 2025 season with the Lucknow Super Giants, he requested rest from the ongoing T20I series against England. Pooran has made it clear that his playing future lies in franchise cricket. With global T20 leagues offering financial stability, flexible schedules, and high competition levels, many players are prioritizing them over national commitments. Pooran's decision aligns with this trend. By retiring from international duties, he gains greater control over his schedule and preserves his body for franchise cricket, which is also a financially rewarding deal for him.
