Why Have Arunachal Pradesh Forfeited Their Ranji Trophy Opening Match? Explained

Arunachal Pradesh have forfeited its opening match of the 2026-27 Ranji Trophy Plate Group against Nagaland amid an administrative crisis within the Arunachal Cricket Association (ACA).

The match was scheduled to begin on Sunday, October 11, in Ahmedabad, but the team could not take the field because of an unresolved leadership dispute and an ongoing legal battle before the Gauhati High Court.

Why Have Arunachal Pradesh Forfeited Their Ranji Trophy Opening Match Explained

The controversy has disrupted the state's domestic cricket operations, leaving officials unable to organise team selection and preparations. The situation has also affected age-group cricket, raising concerns about Arunachal Pradesh's participation in the ongoing domestic season.

Arunachal Cricket Association's Leadership Dispute

The crisis stems from a dispute between rival factions within the state cricket association. The ACA conducted its elections in September 2026, with Nabam Vivek elected as president. However, several district cricket associations challenged the election process before the Itanagar bench of the Gauhati High Court, alleging irregularities.

The court has heard the matter and reserved its order. With the legal dispute unresolved and a stay order in place, the association has been left without a functioning authority capable of taking key administrative decisions.

Consequently, the selection of players, organisation of training camps and preparations for competitive fixtures have been affected. Players contracted to represent Arunachal Pradesh were also left uncertain about their reporting arrangements for the Ranji Trophy opener.

Why Can't the BCCI Intervene?

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has been unable to resolve the immediate problem because of the ongoing court proceedings.

BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia told PTI that the court's stay prevented the national board from intervening in the state association's affairs. He explained that there was no one currently running the state body and that the BCCI would have to wait for the court's clearance.

The situation is particularly complicated because the BCCI cannot simply appoint an independent selection panel while the legal restrictions remain in force. This differs from the intervention undertaken in Bihar's cricket administration, where the board had previously constituted an independent selection panel.

On Thursday, October 8, the state's Under-19 team failed to turn up for its Vinoo Mankad Trophy match against Sikkim in Bhubaneswar. The absence of a functioning authority to make selection and administrative decisions was cited as the reason behind the team's inability to participate.

The immediate priority, however, is resolving the association's leadership dispute and restoring a functioning administrative structure. Until the court provides clarity, the game will continue to get hampered.
