Why is BCCI arranging a meeting with Gautam Gambhir, Ajit Agarkar? Reason Revealed

By MyKhel Staff

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has convened an urgent meeting involving India's head coach Gautam Gambhir, chief selector Ajit Agarkar, and other senior officials ahead of the second ODI against South Africa.

There have been reports suggesting the meeting taking place in Raipur, while it can also be deferred to a couple of days later in Vizag, the venue of the 3rd and final ODI of the series.

Why is BCCI arranging a meeting with Gautam Gambhir Ajit Agarkar Reason Revealed

The meeting aims to address pressing issues related to team selection consistency, long-term development, and improving overall team performance following a disappointing home Test series defeat to South Africa. The BCCI intends to clarify tactics and planning, particularly as India is a strong contender to defend the T20 World Cup next year and aims for success in the upcoming ODI World Cup.

The meeting is expected to feature key figures like BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia. This comes amid speculation about the futures of senior players Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma and possible communication gaps between the team management and senior players. There have been reports of a communication gap between head coach Gautam Gambhir and the two Indian stalwarts, which also needs a resolution.

This development follows a phase of transition for Indian cricket, where the team management and selectors, led by Gambhir and Agarkar, face pressure to make decisive improvements. Despite the setbacks, no immediate changes to the coaching or selection setup are expected.

After a series of disappointing performances in Tests, the major challenge for the Indian team is to preserve their white ball credentials, which has been excellent in recent times. India won the Champions Trophy earlier this year, followed by the Asia Cup T20 crown in September. But the litmus test for Gambhir is the upcoming T20 World Cup, and an underwhelming outing in that one can bring damaging ramifications.

Rohit, Virat future likely to be discussed

As the meeting takes place, the future of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli is set to be discussed as well. The veteran duo have been immense in the solitary format they play, but BCCI believes there should be a proper planning and communication with the senior duo about their role in the side.
