The upcoming Emerging Teams Asia Cup 2024, scheduled to start on Friday, October 18, will see eight teams compete at the Al Amerat Stadium in Oman.
The eight teams will include the second-tier 'A’ teams of Test-playing nations like India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Afghanistan, as well as the three associate nations of Oman, UAE, and Hong Kong.

This year’s Emerging Teams Asia Cup will be important as it is the first time that the tournament is played in the T20 format, allowing for quicker gameplays. Previously, the tournament featured List A ODI matches.
Despite being a 'second-tier’ tournament for the Asian Cricket Council (ACC), the Emerging Teams Asia Cup has several important aspects for cricketing nations, including providing a developmental field for the next generation of players.
Let’s have a look at the three important reasons why the Emerging Teams Asia Cup 2024 will be important to big cricketing nations like India A and Pakistan A, as well as smaller teams such as Oman and Hong Kong.
One aspect of the tournament is the immense talent pool it taps into for teams like India, which generates dozens of talented players through domestic leagues and the IPL. With an ever-expanding talent base, India A squads have consistently produced players who go on to represent the senior team.
Examples from previous editions of the Emerging Teams Asia Cup include the likes of Shubman Gill, who went on to become a key figure in the Indian senior side, and Prithvi Shaw, both of whom emerged from the India A setup in 2017. Other talented players to make the jump from the India Emerging Side to the full international squad include Ruturaj Gaikwad (2018), Dhruv Jurel, Riyan Parag, and Kuldip Yadav.
Several former cricketing giants have struggled in the past year, but few teams have been as poor as Pakistan has been in recent times. Their disappointing results, which began at the ICC T20 World Cup, saw captain Babar Azam being dropped from the helm.
However, fielding their second-tier team in the upcoming Emerging Teams Asia Cup 2024 will be a good chance to try younger players, thus giving more options to the selectors in their upcoming matches.
Young players such as Qasim Akram, Abbas Afridi, and Mohammad Haris will have a chance to impress onlookers in a more leading role in the national team jersey, hoping to make their mark for the senior teams. On the other hand, players such as Haider Ali and Shahnawaz Dahani, who are yet to get their international careers off the track, will have a chance to earn a second chance with their performances at the tournament.
More than the big fishes such as India and Pakistan, the Emerging Teams Asia Cup 2024 will be a chance for the Associate Nations in Asia, such as Oman, UAE, and Hong Kong to test their mettle against the cricketing giants.
Matches against Bangladesh A, India A, and Pakistan A will be a nice change of pace for these smaller nations, whose usual list of opponents includes other Associate Nations such as Malaysia, Maldives, Mongolia, and others.
