Why is former CSK, RCB player Scott Kuggeleijn removed from County side Hampshire after massive Public Backlash?

Hampshire have reversed their decision to sign New Zealand all-rounder Scott Kuggeleijn, withdrawing him from the club just hours after naming him in their squad for the County Championship clash against Warwickshire.

The 34-year-old had been brought in on a short-term deal to feature in Hampshire's final four matches of the season, but his inclusion immediately triggered a strong reaction from supporters and some members of the club.

Why did Hampshire remove Kuggeleijn?

The reason behind Hampshire's U-turn was the widespread backlash over Kuggeleijn's past legal case. The New Zealand international was charged with sexual violation by rape and indecent assault in 2015. His first trial ended with a hung jury in 2016, before he was found not guilty at a retrial in 2017.

Despite his acquittal, the case has remained a source of controversy whenever Kuggeleijn has returned to the international cricket spotlight. Following the criticism from supporters and concerns raised internally, Hampshire reconsidered the decision and opted not to have him represent the club.

Hampshire respond to supporter pressure

Kuggeleijn's name appeared in Hampshire's 15-member squad for the Warwickshire fixture on Tuesday, but the club had not formally announced his signing on its social-media channels. The backlash intensified after his inclusion became public, with supporters expressing anger online and some raising the possibility of protests or boycotts.

Hampshire subsequently issued a statement on Wednesday, saying it had "reflected and listened to feedback from our staff and supporters" before confirming that Kuggeleijn would not represent the club.

Kuggeleijn's international career

Kuggeleijn faced criticism in New Zealand when he was selected for the Test squad against England in 2023. Then-New Zealand head coach Gary Stead defended his selection after he replaced the injured Kyle Jamieson.

Kuggeleijn has represented New Zealand in all three formats, playing three Tests, two ODIs and 18 T20Is. His most recent international appearance came against Australia in March 2024. He had been playing T20 cricket in Darwin before Hampshire's short-term move.

Scott Kuggeleijn also played in IPL

In the Indian Premier League, Kuggeleijn was roped in by Chennai Super Kings in 2019. The 34-year-old also played 2 matches for CSK and picked 2 wickets. He was also part of the Royal Challengers Bengaluru squad in IPL 2021 but didn't play a match for them.
