Why is IPL 2025 Final moved to Ahmedabad from Eden Gardens in Kolkata?

The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 final, which was initially set to take place at Kolkata's iconic Eden Gardens, has been officially shifted to the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

This unexpected change was driven by a confluence of factors, primarily involving monsoon forecasts, and wider geopolitical tensions.

Eden Gardens

The IPL 2025 campaign faced an abrupt interruption in early May due to escalations along the India-Pakistan border following a major terror-related incident in Jammu & Kashmir. With national security at the forefront, the tournament was temporarily paused for over a week before resuming operations on May 17 after a ceasefire agreement was reached. As a result of the suspension, the league stage and the playoffs were pushed back, with the final rescheduled to June 3.

Why is IPL 2025 Final moved to Ahmedabad from Kolkata?

The delay placed the concluding stages of the tournament dangerously close to the arrival of the Southwest monsoon, especially in eastern regions such as Kolkata.

Kolkata typically begins experiencing monsoon conditions by early June, and weather forecasts for the revised date of the final indicated a high probability of heavy rain. The BCCI, mindful of the challenges faced during previous rain-marred matches, decided to preemptively relocate the final to a more weather-secure venue to avoid any disruption.

Ahmedabad, in contrast, experiences a drier climate in early June and was therefore deemed a safer option to host the final without meteorological interference.

Why Ahmedabad Was Chosen

The Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad is the largest cricket stadium in the world and has consistently hosted high-profile matches with world-class infrastructure and fan capacity. It offers unmatched logistics, hospitality, and broadcasting capabilities, making it a natural fallback for a marquee event like the IPL final.

In addition to the final, the Narendra Modi Stadium will also host Qualifier 2, while Qualifier 1 and the Eliminator will be played in Mullanpur.

Revised IPL 2025 Playoff Schedule

Qualifier 1: May 29 - Mullanpur

Eliminator: May 30 - Mullanpur

Qualifier 2: June 1 - Ahmedabad

Final: June 3 - Ahmedabad
