Why Is Shreyas Iyer Captaining India in Final Two ODIs vs New Zealand? Reason Explained

Shreyas Iyer will captain India in the fourth and fifth ODIs against New Zealand as the selectors adopt a split-captaincy arrangement for the five-match series scheduled from November 4 to 15, 2026. Shubman Gill will lead the side in the opening three matches before Iyer takes over for the remainder of the ODI assignment.

The decision is primarily linked to India's upcoming two-Test series against New Zealand, which begins on November 19 in Wellington. But after BCCI announced the team, it has created a degree of concern among the fans over Gill's captaincy grip in the 50-over format.

Why Is Shreyas Iyer Captaining India in Final Two ODIs vs New Zealand Reason Explained

Why Is Shubman Gill Not Leading India in the Final Two ODIs?

Gill is India's designated ODI captain and will also lead the Test team during the New Zealand tour. Managing his workload and ensuring adequate preparation for the longer format are central considerations behind the arrangement.

The Indian captain faces a demanding schedule, with the ODI series followed almost immediately by the two-Test contest, which forms part of the ICC World Test Championship cycle. New Zealand conditions can pose a significant challenge to visiting batters, particularly because of the assistance available to seam bowlers.

Gill's early departure from the ODI group is therefore intended to give him more time to prepare for the red-ball matches rather than requiring him to remain involved throughout the entire limited-overs series.

Shreyas Iyer Gets Leadership Opportunity

Iyer has been named vice-captain for the first three ODIs and will assume the captaincy for the final two matches at Mount Maunganui. Ishan Kishan will serve as his deputy during that phase.

The arrangement gives India continuity in leadership while allowing Iyer to take greater responsibility. It also provides the selectors with an opportunity to assess their leadership options without making a permanent change to the ODI captaincy.

KL Rahul, who is included in the first three-match squad as wicketkeeper, is also absent from the final two-match group as India manage preparations across formats. With Gill expected to focus on the Test assignment, Iyer will have the responsibility of leading India in the closing matches. Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli are set to continue for all five ODI matches.
