Former cricket umpire Steve Bucknor, who retired in 2009, has unexpectedly become the centre of attention on social media, thanks to a viral post by cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar.
Known for his calm demeanour and record-breaking umpiring career, Bucknor’s name resurfaced in cricketing conversations due to a cheeky reference made by the Indian batting maestro.

Sachin Tendulkar, revered as the "God of Cricket," shared an intriguing post on X (formerly Twitter). Featuring an image of three trees resembling cricket stumps, Tendulkar humorously asked, "Can you guess which umpire made the stumps feel this big? 🤔" The post quickly garnered over 2.2 million impressions and tens of thousands of likes, sparking a wave of nostalgic reactions from cricket fans.
The online frenzy pointed to a controversial moment during the 2003 India vs. Australia Test match. In that game, Bucknor adjudged Tendulkar leg-before-wicket on a delivery from Jason Gillespie, which replays later showed was missing the stumps.
A Jamaican by birth, Bucknor was a trailblazer in cricket umpiring. He officiated in 128 Test matches and 181 ODIs, including a record five consecutive World Cup finals from 1992 to 2007. Beyond cricket, Bucknor was also a football referee and a high school mathematics teacher, underscoring his versatility.
While Bucknor's career was marked by accolades, including ICC awards for officiating 100 Test matches and ODIs, it was not without controversy. He faced criticism for several decisions, notably involving Sachin Tendulkar, and admitted to errors in hindsight.
Tendulkar’s post unleashed a flurry of responses, ranging from humorous to heartfelt. Former cricketer Irfan Pathan joined the conversation, quipping, “The one who would have run miles away from the cricket ground in the times of DRS. SB.”
Prominent cricket analyst Aakash Chopra remarked, “One name. Many memories. Bucknor always made it interesting.”
