Sanju Samson's exclusion from the Vijay Hazare Trophy by the Kerala Cricket Association (KCA) has sparked widespread outrage, overshadowing his promising career and depriving Indian cricket of a proven match-winner.
Despite informing the KCA of his availability after recovering from injury, the association decided to bar him from participating. This move has not only hurt Samson's career but may have cost him a spot in India's 2025 Champions Trophy squad.

The controversy began when Samson expressed his readiness to play in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. Instead of welcoming his return, the KCA criticised his absence from the pre-tournament camp and ruled him out. KCA President Jayesh George defended the decision, stating, "Kerala cricket doesn't rely on just one player". However, this response has been widely criticised, especially since Samson had communicated his availability and had valid reasons for missing the camp.
The situation became even more contentious when Abdul Basith, who missed the camp and was initially excluded from the squad, was later allowed to join the team and play in the third match. This inconsistency in the application of rules has raised suspicions that Samson's exclusion was premeditated, casting doubt on the fairness of the decision.
Shashi Tharoor, a Member of Parliament from Kerala, voiced his frustration with the KCA's actions on social media, labeling the decision "vindictive" and damaging to Kerala cricket's reputation. "Depriving a player of his stature is unforgivable," he wrote, reflecting the sentiments of cricket fans across India.
The uproar also brought attention to a 2022 tweet from Gautam Gambhir, India's current head coach, in which he lamented Samson's lack of opportunities in the Indian team. "Sanju Samson is a match-winner who has been given fewer chances than he deserves," Gambhir had tweeted, a sentiment that now resonates in light of Samson's exclusion from the Champions Trophy squad, potentially due to the lack of recent match practice.
This misstep comes when India's middle order has been under scrutiny. Samson's versatility in playing under pressure and accelerating when needed would have been an asset to the squad. His omission is not just a personal loss but also a missed opportunity for the team.
The KCA's handling of the matter has been heavily criticised. A player of Samson's calibre, who has been a consistent performer for both Kerala and India, deserved a more respectful approach. Poor communication, administrative inflexibility, and a sense of favouritism have contributed to this avoidable controversy, igniting a wider debate on how state associations manage their players.
