Why Moeen Ali Skipped IPL for PSL: England Star Explains Karachi Kings Decision

Former England all-rounder Moeen Ali has explained his decision to skip the IPL 2026 season and instead feature in the Pakistan Super League (PSL), citing the need for more playing time and a shorter tournament schedule.

The 38-year-old, who represented Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL 2025, opted to register for PSL this year, joining Karachi Kings amid overlapping schedules between the two leagues.

Shorter PSL window and family time influenced decision

Speaking on a podcast, Moeen said the length of the PSL season played a major role in his choice, particularly at this stage of his career.

"There are a few reasons. I'm 38 now, and I still want to play, do well, and extend my career as much as possible. Karachi was a big factor in my decision to come here. It's a shorter competition, which works better for my family and me," Moeen said.

The PSL's relatively compact schedule compared to the IPL allowed him to balance professional commitments with personal priorities, something he indicated had become increasingly important late in his career.

Lack of opportunities in IPL also played a role

Moeen also pointed to limited game time during IPL 2025 as another factor behind his decision.

He was bought by Kolkata Knight Riders for ₹2 crore last season but featured in only six matches and batted just twice, scoring five runs across those appearances.

"Last year in the IPL, I played only half the games and barely got to bat, just twice. At this stage, I want to be out there; I want to bat," he said.

"I feel like I'm playing good cricket towards the back end of my career, and I just want to keep going."

His comments reflect a broader challenge faced by senior overseas players in franchise cricket, where competition for spots remains intense.

Desire to experience PSL also a long-term goal

Moeen added that playing in the PSL had been something he had long considered, even though the scheduling clash with IPL made participation difficult in previous years.

"You're never guaranteed a place anywhere, even here, but I just want to enjoy my cricket as much as I can. I've always wanted to experience the PSL, but unfortunately, it slightly clashes with the IPL," he said.

Now representing Karachi Kings, Moeen is reportedly earning around ₹2.14 crore for the PSL season, marking a new chapter in his late-career franchise journey.
