Karachi, May 22: A social media firestorm has erupted around Pakistan wicketkeeper-batsman Azam Khan after a video surfaced online capturing him wiping sweat with a US dollar bill.
The video, which also features Pakistan national team captain Babar Azam and other cricketers, hasn't gone down well with Pakistan cricket fans due to its perceived insensitivity.

Fans have taken to social media to express their disapproval, accusing the players of a blatant lack of empathy and basic human values during a time of economic hardship for Pakistan.
In the video, Babar could be heard laughingly asking Azam, "What happened Abba?", who responded: "Bohat garmi hai (It is too hot here)," while wiping sweat with the dollar note leading to laughter from teammates.
Comments ranged from calls for the team to receive better education regarding social awareness to highlighting the stark contrast between Khan's display of wealth and the struggles faced by ordinary Pakistanis.
"Apart from a rare few in Pakistan's sporting history, none have the charisma, impact and influence of any kind, nothing for a young kid to aspire to. The current lot is just hopeless," a social media user wrote.
Another user emphasised the need for education, stating: "That's why we always keep saying basic education is a must, these people travel the world but don't learn the basic humane values. Send them to school before you send them to an international platform."
One more fan wrote that while Pakistani people were facing food shortage, Azam was sitting under a roof and mocking poor people.
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has reportedly joined the chorus of disapproval. According to sources, the video did not go down well with top officials, and the players have been advised to exercise greater caution regarding their social media activity. This comes as the PCB already maintains a dedicated digital media team responsible for managing the team's online presence.
On May 21, Azam Khan was sold to B-Love Kandy in the accelerated round in the Lanka Premier League (LPL) 2024 Auction after going unsold in the opening round. Khan initially found no takers at his base price of $50000 but the Kandy-based franchise bid for him in the next round.
