Why Rohit Sharma Should Continue To Captain India In Tests? Navjot Singh Sidhu EXPLAINS

Despite India's recent struggles in Test cricket, former cricketer Navjot Singh Sidhu believes Rohit Sharma should continue leading the team, especially in the upcoming five-match Test series against England.

Sidhu strongly opposes any leadership change, stating that Rohit's experience and past performances in England make him the right man for the job.

India may have enjoyed success in white-ball cricket, winning two ICC trophies in the past nine months, but their red-ball form has been concerning. They suffered a home series loss against New Zealand, followed by a defeat in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 against Australia, ultimately failing to qualify for the World Test Championship (WTC) 2025 final.

Amidst reports suggesting Jasprit Bumrah could take over as Test captain, Sidhu has called for continuity in leadership.

In an interaction with Sports Tak, Sidhu emphasized the importance of maintaining a balance between experience and youth until 2027. He argued that Rohit's strong record in England should not be overlooked.

"How can you change Rohit Sharma? See his record in England; see his century there. The ideal scenario is to preserve the old and know the new. We need to keep a mixture of youth and experienced players till 2027. Until you create a good mixture, you won't be able to make a good team. It's a baseless question, Rohit should be the captain," Sidhu stated.

Sidhu also questioned who could realistically replace Rohit as Test captain, highlighting that leadership changes require a solid alternative. He referenced India's recent tour of Australia, where Rohit dropped himself for the fifth Test but the team still lost.

"At times, I'm left surprised that if there are 10 people in India, they have 20 opinions. You tell me, whom will you appoint as captain at the last minute, and who has performed like that? Rohit Sharma didn't play the 5th Test in Australia as he selflessly dropped himself. Did his replacement score 150? You need to have a replacement as well," he added.

With a challenging Test series against England on the horizon, Sidhu's argument underscores the importance of leadership stability. While India's recent Test performances have been below par, Rohit's experience in English conditions and his ability to lead from the front could be crucial as the team looks to bounce back.
