Why Sanju Samson Is Emerging as CSK’s Long-Term Captaincy Option
As Chennai Super Kings slowly prepare for life after MS Dhoni, one name is increasingly being linked with the franchise's long-term leadership future - Sanju Samson.
According to sources close to the development, Samson is viewed internally as a serious future captaincy option at CSK, even if the transition may not happen immediately.

"Whether Sanju is named captain from next year or the following season, he is 200 per cent the next captain of CSK," a source told CricBlogger.
However, the franchise is reportedly not rushing into a leadership change just yet, with Ruturaj Gaikwad still leading the side and Dhoni's influence continuing to shape the dressing room.
Why Sanju Samson fits the CSK captaincy mould
Samson's move to Chennai Super Kings ahead of IPL 2026 immediately triggered speculation about succession planning within the franchise.
The India T20I batter arrived at CSK after captaining Rajasthan Royals for several seasons and brought with him:
- proven IPL leadership experience
- calm game management
- strong public popularity
- tactical maturity behind the stumps
Interestingly, sources suggest CSK management has been impressed not only by Samson's performances, but also by his demeanour and cricketing approach.
"He almost resembles Dhoni"
According to insiders, Samson's on-field body language and tactical movements have reminded many inside the franchise of Dhoni himself.
"Like the Indian team set-up, Sanju has already built a strong level of trust within CSK and has adopted a style similar to Dhoni in the way he approaches a match. Even when he is changing field positions between overs, from behind he almost resembles Dhoni in his mannerisms," the report stated.
Why CSK may not change captains immediately
Despite the growing speculation, Chennai Super Kings are unlikely to make an immediate captaincy switch.
Ruturaj Gaikwad has led the side respectably over the past few seasons, and sources indicate the franchise may only take a final leadership call after IPL 2027.
That timeline could allow:
- Gaikwad to continue developing as captain
- Samson to establish himself deeper within the CSK setup
- the franchise to smoothly transition into the post-Dhoni era
Sanju Samson reportedly not demanding leadership
Importantly, Samson himself has publicly downplayed captaincy expectations.
Speaking on the Super Kings Podcast, the former Rajasthan Royals skipper said he never joined CSK expecting leadership responsibilities.
"No, because I already had a team, I was already in a place. So, I wanted to come out of there and join another team. So, in that transaction, you can't actually have demands."
"You go there, and you try to prove your worth. You try to behave the way you are, perform [to your] maximum, and then from there you take on [captaincy]," Samson added.
Sanju Samson's strong first season at CSK
Even without the captaincy, Samson has enjoyed a brilliant debut season in yellow.
Sanju Samson IPL 2026 stats
- 402 runs
- 10 innings
- Average: 57.43
- Strike rate: 167.50
- 2 centuries
- 1 half-century
His performances have quickly made him one of CSK's most important batters and strengthened belief that he could eventually become the franchise's long-term leader.
Could CSK be planning for India's next T20 captain too?
Another factor working in Samson's favour is his growing reputation within India's T20 leadership discussions.
The report claims Samson is already being viewed as a future India T20 captaincy candidate alongside Ishan Kishan, with support from:
- Ravi Shastri
- influential former cricketers
- sections of the Indian coaching setup
For CSK, that creates an attractive long-term opportunity:
- a proven IPL batter
- a potential India captain
- a player capable of becoming the face of the franchise after Dhoni
What happens next at CSK?
For now:
- Ruturaj Gaikwad remains CSK captain
- Dhoni still continues to influence the franchise setup
- Samson remains focused on performances rather than leadership
But internally, the possibility of Samson eventually taking over appears very real.
And as the Dhoni era slowly winds down, CSK may already be shaping the next chapter of leadership at Chepauk.
