Why Saudi Arabia May Host the IPL Auction 2025 in November? What is Their Current ICC Ranking?

By MyKhel Staff

Saudi Arabia is emerging as a frontrunner to host the IPL Auction 2025 this November, as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) considers various options for the mega event, reported Cricbuzz.

The Gulf nation's growing presence in international sports, including recent investments in cricket, makes it a strong candidate to host one of the biggest events in world cricket.

IPL Auction 2025 Saudi Arabia

While no final decision has been made, Saudi Arabia's interest in hosting high-profile events aligns with its larger goal of becoming a global sports hub. Despite Saudi Arabia's cricketing ambitions, it is important to note that the country is currently ranked 33rd in the ICC Men's T20I rankings, and it does not have a ranking in ODIs or Test cricket. This highlights the significant gap the nation still needs to bridge in terms of cricketing prowess on the international stage.

Saudi Arabia Performance among ICC Associate Nations

Saudi Arabia's performance on the field this year has been a mix of highs and lows. The team played nine international matches, winning five and losing four. In the ACC Men's T20I Premier Cup 2024, Saudi Arabia secured a commanding victory over Hong Kong by 55 runs but fell short against Malaysia, Qatar, and Nepal. However, their recent success in the Quadrangular Twenty20 Series in Thailand 2024, where they won three consecutive matches, including a dominant 8-wicket victory over Thailand in the final, has been a major highlight.

While Saudi Arabia continues to make strides in the world of cricket, IPL franchises remain cautious as they await clarity on key auction rules. The BCCI has yet to announce the retention guidelines and Right to Match (RTM) options, creating uncertainty for teams as they prepare for the auction. Reports suggest that the rules will be finalized by the end of September, giving franchises around two months to strategize.

The BCCI is reportedly weighing three retention options, with the most popular being four retentions and two RTMs. This approach would allow teams to keep their core players while giving others a chance to bid on marquee talent. Meanwhile, discussions continue around whether to hold a mini or mega auction, with a hybrid model potentially on the horizon.
