Australia's Big Bash Is Coming to India:Chennai to Host Historic First Overseas Match
The Big Bash League is set to make history by staging its first-ever match outside Australia, with Chennai confirmed as the venue for the opening game of the 2026/27 season.
Defending champions Perth Scorchers will take on the Melbourne Renegades at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on December 12, marking a landmark moment for Australian domestic cricket and the growing cricketing partnership between India and Australia.

Chennai to host historic BBL opener
The match will begin at 2:40 PM IST, following the fourth day's play of the opening Test between Australia and New Zealand in Perth.
The announcement was made jointly by Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during an event at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, with both governments backing the initiative as part of broader sporting and diplomatic ties.
Why is the BBL coming to India?
Cricket Australia believes bringing the BBL to India-even for a single fixture-will significantly boost the league's popularity in the world's biggest cricket market.
"Our sport has such an authentic connection in India," Cricket Australia General Manager of Big Bash Leagues Alistair Dobson said.
"This game is also part of a much bigger initiative across both our governments. Cricket is a connector for both our countries."
CA officials also expect the fixture to become the most-watched Australian domestic sporting event in history.
The move comes as Cricket Australia explores private investment opportunities for BBL franchises, with the Melbourne Renegades and Perth Scorchers expected to be among the clubs that could attract investor interest if a new ownership model is approved.
Why was Chennai chosen?
Chepauk was selected following discussions between Cricket Australia, the BCCI and Australian government officials.
A joint CA-BBL delegation visited Chennai earlier this year to inspect the venue and held meetings with BCCI officials during the IPL.
The stadium is already familiar territory for Australia, having hosted their opening match of the 2023 ODI World Cup before they recovered to win the tournament. Chepauk is also scheduled to host the second Test of next year's Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
Renegades begin a new era
The Melbourne Renegades will enter the season with a new home base after moving their men's home fixtures from Marvel Stadium to the Melbourne Cricket Ground, ending a 15-year association with Marvel.
The club was selected as the designated home team for the Chennai fixture partly because its revised schedule provided greater flexibility.
New Renegades general manager Max Abbott said the move to the MCG would allow the club to build on the success of recent Melbourne derbies while creating bigger matchday occasions for fans.
The historic clash in Chennai will not only launch the 16th BBL season but also mark the first time an Australian domestic cricket competition has staged a regular-season match on Indian soil.
