Wicked stars set to headline opening ceremony of ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026

The ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2026 will open with a unique blend of sport and theatre, with the cast of the globally acclaimed musical Wicked set to perform live ahead of England's tournament opener against Sri Lanka at Edgbaston on June 12.

In a first-of-its-kind collaboration between a major international sporting event and a West End production, Wicked stars Emma Kingston and Zizi Strallen will lead the performance as Elphaba and Glinda, bringing some of the musical's most iconic songs to a packed stadium and a worldwide television audience before the first ball is bowled.

The initiative has been launched in partnership with the ICC's UK broadcast partner Sky Sports and forms part of the governing body's effort to position the Women's T20 World Cup as more than just a sporting spectacle.

The performance also coincides with the 20th anniversary of Wicked's run in London's West End, creating a crossover between two major entertainment platforms. Organisers believe the opening ceremony will combine the drama of live theatre with the excitement of elite international cricket as the tournament gets underway in Birmingham.

The announcement comes with growing anticipation around the competition, which has already become the highest-selling Women's T20 World Cup in history. More than 150,000 tickets have been sold with three weeks remaining before the tournament begins.

ICC Chief Executive Sanjog Gupta said the governing body wants its global tournaments to become platforms that extend beyond sport alone.

"Our core belief is that the ICC's marquee global events should serve as platforms for content, community, culture and commerce with the athletic spectacle as the core product," Gupta said.

"Partnering with the globally celebrated production of Wicked for the opening ceremony of the ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2026 reflects our ambition to take the tournament beyond its existing position as a premier sporting event into expanded realms of culture and entertainment.

"We want to blend sport, music and culture in a way that transcends the traditional boundaries around our competitions. With this performance, we aim to create an immersive, globally resonant moment that drives deeper interest in the event and attracts new audiences."

A spokesperson for Wicked welcomed the collaboration, highlighting the similarities between theatre and live sport.

"For 20 years Wicked has brought audiences together through unforgettable live performance, so to open the ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2026 in front of a global sporting audience is incredibly exciting for us," the spokesperson said.

"There is a real sense of drama, emotion and anticipation shared between theatre and live sport, and this performance is a chance to bring those worlds together in a truly unique way on one of the biggest stages possible."

Women's T20 World Cup Tournament Director Beth Barrett-Wild described the opening ceremony as an unconventional but fitting way to launch the competition.

"You wouldn't normally expect to see world-class cricket sharing the same stage as a hit West End musical, but that is exactly what makes this such an unmissable way to open the tournament," Barrett-Wild said.

"Bringing the magic of Wicked and its hugely talented cast to Edgbaston will create an epic night of spectacle, emotion and atmosphere. It will also set the tone for 24 days of competition showcasing the very best in global cricket."

The Women's T20 World Cup will run from June 12 to July 5 across venues in England, with the opening night now set to feature one of the most unusual collaborations in the tournament's history.
