Will Injuries Derail CSK's IPL 2026 Playoff Dreams? Stephen Fleming Speaks Out
The Indian Premier League 2026 season has been an absolute rollercoaster for the Chennai Super Kings (CSK). After enduring a notoriously slow start to the campaign, the franchise has mounted a phenomenal comeback, winning six out of its last eight matches.
However, despite this resurgence, their playoff qualification currently hangs by a thread. Sitting in a precarious fifth position on the points table with the league stage winding down, every remaining fixture including their upcoming must-win battle against the Lucknow Super Giants at the Ekana Stadium, is effectively a knockout game.

As they prepare for this encounter, their biggest hurdle hasn't just been outsmarting the opposition, but managing a rapidly mounting injury list. Addressing the media to shed light on these immense challenges during a press conference in Lucknow on May 14, 2026, CSK Head Coach Stephen Fleming opened up about the team's frustrating physical setbacks.
Speaking on the sheer volume of fitness issues they have had to manage since the start of the tournament, the head coach stated, "It is unlucky. A couple of the boys came into the competition with niggles. Ghosh was one of those that we were nursing through, and then he had a fall, so that was unfortunate," said Fleming.
Defending the team's training and workload management protocols, Fleming emphasized that these setbacks are largely a product of a packed global cricketing calendar.
"We're not doing anything to put strain on these guys. They've all been playing a lot of cricket; it's just one of those things. But we're certainly not turning a blind eye to it. We are working very hard on recovery, and we have a very professional staff who have been with us for a number of years, so that area is well looked after," he added.
While vital cogs have been missing, this crisis has forced CSK's emerging talents into the spotlight. Fleming was quick to praise the squad's resilience and the silver lining of their current situation.
"We are really pleased with the way the players have improved. To be in this position now is something many thought we wouldn't be, but the group's been really strong. Given the core of young players, going forward, I think it's quite exciting," said Fleming.
Whether the Chennai Super Kings can overcome this stroke of bad luck and successfully navigate their way into the IPL 2026 playoffs remains to be seen, but their young core is already proving they have the mettle to fight until the very end to keep their championship dreams alive.
