The Board of Control for Cricket in India is reportedly set to skip the traditional opening ceremony for IPL 2026 as a mark of respect to victims of last year's stampede tragedy in Bengaluru.
According to reports, the decision has been taken in remembrance of the 11 fans who lost their lives during the incident on June 4, 2025. The IPL 2026 opener will see Royal Challengers Bengaluru face Sunrisers Hyderabad at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium on March 28.

Traditionally, the IPL season begins with a high-profile opening ceremony featuring performances by leading entertainers and celebrities. However, this year, no such celebration is expected.
"Due to last year's tragic incident on June 4, there will be no formal function on the day of the start of IPL-2026," a BCCI source was quoted as saying. The decision is understood to be a gesture of respect toward those who lost their lives in the tragedy.
The move also aligns with recent tribute initiatives in Bengaluru, including memorial gestures planned at the Chinnaswamy Stadium to honour the victims.
While the opening ceremony may be skipped, reports suggest that the IPL governing council is planning a grand closing ceremony during the tournament final, scheduled for May 31.
IPL 2025 featured a star-studded opening ceremony at Eden Gardens, which included performances from prominent Bollywood and music personalities. The absence of a similar launch event in 2026 would mark a significant shift in tradition.
Despite the expected absence of an opening ceremony, IPL 2026 will still kick off as scheduled on March 28 in Bengaluru.
The decision to forgo celebrations underscores the league's intent to prioritise remembrance and respect, ensuring that the start of the season reflects solidarity with the families affected by the tragedy.
