The inclusion of Jasprit Bumrah in India’s squad for the Champions Trophy 2025 has brought optimism to fans, but doubts remain over his participation. Bumrah, who suffered a back spasm during the fifth Test against Australia in Sydney, is yet to recover fully, and the selectors are exercising caution.
Chief selector Ajit Agarkar and skipper Rohit Sharma have both indicated uncertainty over his fitness. “Bumrah has been told to off-load for five weeks after and he won't be available for the first two ODIs against England,” Agarkar said in a recent press conference. “We are waiting on his fitness and will know his status in early February from the medical team.”

During the Sydney Test, Bumrah could not bowl in the second innings and later underwent scans, which revealed a back spasm. While he batted on Day 5, he did not take the field, watching helplessly as India succumbed to a defeat. Following the series, the medical team recommended five weeks of rest, ruling him out of at least the first two ODIs against England starting February 6.
The pacer’s fitness will be reassessed on February 2, after which the management will decide his availability for the Champions Trophy. The final deadline for squad changes is February 13, leaving India in a race against time to make crucial decisions.
The uncertainty surrounding Bumrah’s availability has significantly impacted India’s planning, particularly in the fast-bowling department. Mohammed Siraj, a reliable performer, was a surprising omission as selectors opted for Arshdeep Singh, whose death-bowling skills offer a different dimension.
Harshit Rana, a seam-bowling all-rounder, has been drafted into the squad for the England ODIs as insurance in case Bumrah is unable to participate in the Champions Trophy. Rana’s inclusion reflects the team’s need to cover all bases amid Bumrah’s uncertain status.
India will play three ODIs against England on February 6, 9, and 12 in Nagpur, Cuttack, and Ahmedabad, respectively. These matches will serve as a testing ground for India’s final squad composition.
The Champions Trophy begins on February 19, with India placed in Group A alongside Bangladesh, Pakistan, and New Zealand. India will open their campaign against Bangladesh on February 20, followed by a high-stakes clash against Pakistan on February 23 and their final group game against New Zealand on March 2.
Bumrah’s availability is critical for India’s chances in the Champions Trophy. Known for his lethal pace, accuracy, and ability to bowl in crucial phases of the game, his presence significantly strengthens India’s bowling attack. However, given his recent injury history, the team management may adopt a cautious approach, prioritising his long-term fitness.
