Will Sanju Samson recover in time for IPL 2025? Find out all details about his fractured finger

By MyKhel Staff

Sanju Samson faces a race against time to regain full fitness ahead of the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) after fracturing his right index finger during India's fifth T20I against England at the Wankhede Stadium.

The Rajasthan Royals skipper is expected to be sidelined for at least 4-6 weeks, ruling him out of Kerala's Ranji Trophy quarter-final against Jammu and Kashmir.

Sanju Samson Injury Details and Expected Recovery

Samson sustained the injury while facing England's express pacer Jofra Archer, who bowled a delivery close to 150 kmph. He was struck on the third ball of the match, and swelling in his finger worsened once he returned to the dugout. Scans later confirmed a fracture.

According to PTI, Samson has already returned to Thiruvananthapuram and will undergo rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy (NCA). Clearance from the NCA is mandatory for players before they return to competitive action. As of now, his comeback is expected to be in IPL 2025, with Rajasthan Royals.

A source quoted by PTI stated, "Samson has fractured his right index finger. It will take him five to six weeks before he can resume proper nets. So there is no chance of him playing the Ranji Trophy quarter-final for Kerala in Pune from February 8-12. In all likelihood, his comeback will happen in the IPL."

Will Samson Be Fully Fit for IPL 2025?

According to NHS UK, a fractured finger usually takes 6-8 weeks to heal completely, though regaining full strength in the hand could take up to 3-4 months. If Samson follows the prescribed rehab program and undergoes proper training, he should be fit in time for IPL 2025. However, there remains a concern over his match readiness, as he may not have enough time to regain peak form before the tournament begins.

Before this injury setback, Samson endured a poor run of form in the T20I series against England. Despite entering the series on the back of three centuries in his last five T20Is, he struggled against England's pace attack, managing only 51 runs across five matches. His highest score was 26 in the opening game in Kolkata.

The 30-year-old was not included in India's ODI squad against England and also missed selection for the Champions Trophy. His next opportunity in national colours may come in an away series against Bangladesh in August. For now, Samson's primary focus will be on rehabilitation and making a strong return for Rajasthan Royals in IPL 2025.
