Chris Woakes spearheaded England's dominance on the first day of their Test against Sri Lanka at Old Trafford. The visitors showed resilience towards the end but were eventually bowled out for 236. England's batting was cut short due to poor light conditions.
Sri Lanka had a disastrous start, losing six wickets for just three runs within the first seven overs. Woakes (3-32) was instrumental, securing a double-wicket maiden by dismissing Nishan Madushka and Angelo Mathews. Shoaib Bashir (3-56) continued the momentum after lunch, reducing Sri Lanka to 113-7.

Despite the early setbacks, Sri Lanka managed to recover slightly. Captain Dhananjaya de Silva played a crucial innings, scoring 74 off 84 balls. Milan Rathnayake also contributed significantly with 72 runs before both were dismissed by Bashir.
Rathnayake's performance was notable as it marked the highest score ever made by a number nine on Test debut. His efforts helped Sri Lanka inch closer to the 200 mark, providing some stability after their initial collapse.
Stand-in captain Ollie Pope then ran out Vishwa Fernando, bringing an end to Sri Lanka's innings. With deteriorating light conditions, Sri Lanka had to open their bowling with spin. Ben Duckett and Dan Lawrence moved to 22-0 before umpires halted play, leaving 12 overs unbowled.
Pope became the 82nd man to captain England in Test cricket and the 12th this century. Despite losing the toss, he couldn't have hoped for a better start after taking over from the injured Ben Stokes.
