Women's Asia Cup 2024: Shreyanka Patil Ruled Out With Fractured Finger, Tanuja Kanwar Named Replacement

By MyKhel Staff

Spinner Shreyanka Patil has been ruled out of the Women's Asia Cup 2024 due to an injury picked up during India's tournament opener against Pakistan on Friday (July 19) in Dambulla.

The 21-year-old bowled 3.2 overs, finishing with figures of 2 for 14 and was not needed to bat as India wrapped up the win with seven wickets and 5.4 overs to spare.

Shreyanka was an integral part of the Indian team, but now Harmanpreet Kaur & Co will have to make do without her services after a press release from the Asian Cricket Council on Saturday said the offspinner "sustained a fracture to the fourth finger of her left hand."

Shreyanka had also injured herself during the WPL 2024 when she turned up for Royal Challengers Bengaluru. She had in fact suffered an injury to the same hand, ruling her out of action for a couple of matches.

The off-spinner made a comeback as the tournament progressed and finished the WPL 2024 as the leading wicket-taker and won the Emerging Player of the Series award with 13 wickets, including four in the final against Delhi Capitals to help RCB win their maiden title.

Since making her international debut in December 2023, Shreyanka has claimed 16 wickets in 12 T20I matches for India at an economy rate of 7.14. She was one of the four spin options in the squad alongside Deepti Sharma, Asha Sobhana and Radha Yadav.

Indian have already named a replacement by picking uncapped Tanjua Kanwar, who was part of the travelling reserves, in the squad. Tanuja, a left-arm spinner, played for Gujarat Giants in the Women's Premier League earlier this year, and Railways in domestic cricket.

Kanwar, who is yet to represent India, was impressive for Gujarat Giants in the WPL last season. She finished as the team's top wicket-taker with 10 wickets at an economy rate of 7.13 from eight games.

India take on UAE in their second Group A match of the tournament on Sunday (July 21) at the Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium in Dambulla, Sri Lanka before they play their final group game against Nepal on Tuesday (July 23) at the same venue.
