Women's T20 World Cup 2024: How Will Australia Cope With Double Injury Blow? Head Coach Hints at Replacements

By MyKhel Staff

Australia continued their unbeaten run in the Women's T20 World Cup 2024 with a comprehensive victory over Pakistan in the group stage, but suffered a double injury blow during the match at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium in Dubai on Friday (October 11).

Australia made it three wins on the trot to get closer to sealing a semifinal spot from Group A. But lost skipper Alyssa Healy and pacer Tayla Vlaemnick to injury. While Vlaemnick left the field with a dislocated shoulder, Healy was forced off the ground with an acute foot injury.

Although Australia remain unbeaten in the tournament so far, they will face tougher challenges in the upcoming matches, starting with the final group stage match against India on Sunday (October 13). So, they will need to field strong playing 11s for the remainder of the competition.

The injury to skipper Healy could be a blow, but head coach Shelley Nitschke said there would be no panic as there are replacements internally should they be needed. The head coach also said reinforcements can be flown in if needed.

Nitschke indicated the six-time champions would have no hesitation in flying players in for the backend of the tournament should it be warranted.

"If we have to yeah (we would bring in replacement players). Two (players) went off injured tonight, so we have to make sure we have got some coverage and it depends on the prognosis of those two injuries, but that is something we need to consider," Nitschke said after Australia's victory over Pakistan as quoted by the ICC.

Any changes to squads at the T20 World Cup need to be approved by the ICC Technical Committee, with all-rounder Heather Graham the most likely player to receive a call-up as she was part of Australia's T20I squad for their recent home series against New Zealand.

While Graham is an external replacement, there are several players on the current squad that could come in and do the job. Hard-hitting batter Grace Harris, spinner Alana King and pace duo Kim Garth and Darcie Brown would be among the most likely to replace Healy and Vlaeminck.

Who will replace Vlaeminck and Healy?

Kim Garth and Darcie Brown could come in as direct replacements for Vlaemicnk. For Healy, Grace Harris could come in and open the batting. The Australian team has been gifted in that department with several options available from within the playing group.

Harris, Ellyse Perry, Phoebe Litchfield, Tahlia McGrath, Annabel Sutherland and Sophie Molineux have all opened the batting in their careers earlier. McGrath, the vice captain, will lead the side if Healy is ruled out, and Mooney will keep wickets.
