A monumental win over Sri Lanka in the latest group stage match has pulled India back in the knockouts race in the ongoing Women's T20 World Cup.
After a losing start against New Zealand, India got back to winning ways against arch-rivals Pakistan. And now a huge win by 82 runs against Sri Lanka has forced Harmanpreet Kaur and her team back in the race for the semifinal.

After being put into bat, India women scored 172 runs as Smriti Mandhana and Harmanpreet Kaur both racked up half-centuries. India new the importance of a big-margin win and the bowlers did the job perfectly. Asha Shobana and Arundhati Reddy picked up three wickets each while the other bowlers contributed perfectly as the Indian women skittled the Lankans for just 90 runs.
The win for India means they are currently placed 2nd in the points table with 4 points in three matches. Their final group stage match is against Australia on October 13.
If India are to qualify for the semifinals, they will have to ensure a victory against the Australian team. If India don't beat the Aussies in the next match, their chances of progressing to the next stage will be all but over.
Although India can still qualify if they lose against Australia, but in that case, New Zealand will have to lose against Pakistan and Sri Lanka; or win by a small margin against Pakistan and then lose against Sri Lanka where Australia will have to beat Pakistan as well. Although theoretically the outcomes are possible, practically it looks improbable, which means the Indian team must topple the Aussies.
The Net Run Rate is always a pivotal factor in the progression to the next stages in tight situations. With many teams poised to finish with the same number of points, it becomes massively important for Harmanpreet Kaur and her girls to stay ahead of other teams.
India, after the win over Sri Lanka, sits with an NRR of +0.576, which is comparatively better than New Zealand (-0.050). Australia currently have the best NRR with +2.524, which means if the Aussies beat Pakistan in their next match and reach 6 points, India will have to win by a massive margin to dislodge Australia from their top spot.
On the other hand, India will have to also get some help from Pakistan and Sri Lanka as the two Asian sides will face New Zealand. Even if Pakistan and Sri Lanka lose against the Kiwis, a narrow margin victory for the Oceanian nation will be beneficial for India.
