WC 2015: Drop-in pitches Down Under will suit visiting teams, feels Michael Bevan

Bengaluru, Feb 14: Former Australian batsman Michael Bevan feels the drop-in cricket pitches at various venues in Australia will help outsiders, particularly the sub-continental teams, for they tend to be slow and will suit the batting style of teams that are not known to be comfortable on fast pitches. He said so in a guest column posted on ESPNCricinfo.

Bevanm who has played in three World Cups between 1996 and 2003, said such pitches will nullify the home advantage for teams like Australia.

About the playing conditions in New Zealand, Bevan said the home team plays well on slower wickets and tackle spinners decently. That is one reason which made Bevan feel that the Black Caps have a nice chance of doing good in this World Cup.

Bevan, who had major roles in two World Cup semifinals in 1996 and 1999 after his team was in a serious trouble, said certain spinners will have a bigger role to play in this World Cup.

"One of the trends that has cropped up over the last few years is that batsmen have learnt to score more quickly and employed more shots. Bowlers who turn the ball away from the batsman will benefit," the former left-handed batsman who also bowled Chinaman said.

Bevan also pointed out the T20 factor. He said: "Batsmen are increasingly employing certain shots against spinners, like the loft over cover and the reverse sweep. On the one hand, you have left-arm spinners playing a bigger role but the batsmen are used to finding ways to score off these bowlers."
