Bengaluru, Feb 23: Former South African bowler Meyrick Pringle thinks South Africa miss an all-rounder like Jacques Kallis in their current ranks and the expectation from AB De Villiers is quite a lot.

World Cup Special

Pringle, 48, had made his one-day debut against Australia during the 1992 World Cup held in Australia and New Zealand and produced a match-winning bowling figure of 4 for 11 against the West Indies at Christchurch to win the man of the match award. He has played 17 one-day internationals between 1992 and 1994 and four Tests between 1992 and 1995.

Oneindia had a chat with Pringle on South Africa's humiliating loss against India at Melbourne on Sunday and also the ongoing World Cup in Australia and New Zealand. Here is what he told:

Oneindia: Why do you think South Africa lost yesterday against India? Is their batting weak?

Pringle: India just played well in all departments, better side on the day - South Africa bat up to number 6 when Behardien does not play, it's a problem SA has at the moment either to play the extra batter or go with a bowling batter in Parnell or Abbott at 7.

Oneindia: Realistically speaking, is this South African team as good as the past ones? Or is there too much hype since De Villiers played that incredible knock against the West Indies recently? Do they miss a Kirten or Kallis?

Pringle: People think that its up to De Villiers and yes they do expect a lot from him, he is just one of those players that can change a game in no time and does it more than often than none - SA miss the likes of Kallis as we are battling with that all rounder position and we just don't have a all rounder coming through at the moment.

Oneindia: Your thoughts on the current Indian team. Can it defend the title?

Pringle: India have a very good side but I worry a bit about the bowling which has been a problem recently - Last night they all clicked and came off very well for all of them.

Oneindia: Who, according to you, look favourites to win this World Cup?

Pringle: The semi finals will be: Australia, South Africa, New Zealand and India - Australia look extremely difficult to beat, but you never know when it comes to the business end of the tournament, anything can happen.

Oneindia: Do you support so many associate members playing in WC cricket? Should the format be shorter?

Pringle: I don't think it should be shortened as the strength of thee associated members seems to be getting stronger and better. I would like to see more of them involved.

Pringle was seriously injured by a bouncer from Indian speedstar Javagal Srinath during a Test match in Johannesburg in 1992 and could return to the 22 yards only after three years. He announced his retirement from international cricket in 1996.

He served as the coach of teams like the Netherlands and Namibia and also the coaching director at Jaipur Cricket Academy.

Pringle is currently doing commentary for the World Cup Down Under.
