WC 2015: Finally, Australia win WC title at home

Melbourne, March 29: Australia defeated New Zealand by 7 wickets at the Melbourne Cricket Ground here in the final of the 2015 World Cup cricket to win their fifth crown.

However, unlike what is seen generally, Australia is the only team which has never won a World Cup title at home. It had failed to qualify for the semifinals in 1992, the only other time when the World Cup was held on its home soil and all its title victories have come abroad.

Australia have won their previous four crowns in India (1987), England (1999), South Africa (2003) and the West Indies (2007). Two of its losses in the final took place in England (1975) and Pakistan (1996).

Among the other champions, only India have the record of winning the World Cup at both home (2011) and abroad (1983).

Among the other champions, the West Indies have won it twice in England (1975 and 1979), Pakistan in Australia (1992) and Sri Lanka in Pakistan (1996).
