Sydney, March 8: Ace Sri Lankan batsman Kumar Sangakkara slammed his third consecutive century of the ongoing ICC World Cup Down Under against hosts Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Sunday. This is the first time in history that a batsman has scored three back-to-back hundreds at the World Cup.

Sangakkara, who led a Sri Lankan fightback against the Australians who had set them a mammoth target of 377 in 50 overs, had scored two unbeaten centuries in his side's previous two matches, against Bangladesh (105*) at Melbourne and England (117*) at Wellington.

The left-handed batsman, who is playing his final World Cup, was finally dismissed by James Faulkner in the match against Australia. Sangakkara had by then amassed 326 runs off 269 balls in three matches.

Sangakkara also became Sri Lanka's leading scorer (1363 at the end of the Australia match) in the World Cup, eclipsing Sanath Jayasuriya (1165).

The 37-year-old batsman also equalled his colleague Mahela Jayawardena to score the most number of centuries (four) for Sri Lanka in World Cup.
