WC 2015: New Zealand crush West Indies by 143 runs, make semis

Wellington, March 21: The West Indies lost their way after opener Chris Gayle blasted 61 off 33 balls while chasing a mammoth target of 394 against the New Zealand in the fourth quarter-final at the Westpac Stadium here on Saturday. The Caribbeans were skittled out for 250 by the Kiwis in 30.3 overs. Trent Boult took 4 wickets for 44 runs.

Earlier, New Zealand opener Martin Guptill slammed an unbeaten 237 against the West Indies to help his team post 393 for the loss of 6 wickets in 50 overs. Kiwi skipper Brendon McCullum had won the toss and elected to bat. For the West Indies, Jerome Taylor was the pick of the bowlers with 3 wickets for 71 runs.

Guptill broke Chris Gayle's 215 scored against Zimbabwe at Canberra in this edition as the highest individual score at the World Cup. This was also Guptill's second successive ton in this cricket World Cup. He had hit a century against Bangladesh in New Zealand's last group match at Hamilton.


For the Caribbeans, dashing opening batsman Chris Gayle was cleared for the match after he was doubtful with a back injury.

The winner of this match will play South Africa in the first semi-final at Auckland's Eden Park on March 24.

Defending champions India will take on co-hosts Australia in the other semi-final at the Sydney Cricket Ground on March 26.

The final will be played at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on March 29.

New Zealand have played six World Cup semifinals and have lost all of them. The West Indies have won the World Cup twice, in 1975 and 1979, and were the runners in 1983.
